According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office’s interactive crash map, Tulsa County saw 104 traffic fatalities in one year.
Each one is someone’s neighbor, friend, or loved one. Each one is a fellow Tulsan.

Tulsa has a thriving cycling community, but it didn’t start that way.
It’s the result of years of investment in young riders, giving kids the chance to get on a bike early and learn the skills and safety practices that stick.

Kenneth Smith is a Tulsan who has been cycling for most of his life, but this ride was different from the others.
While out riding with a group, he was hit by a careless driver — a moment that changed his life.
The crash left him with physical injuries, but it’s the mental impact that has stayed with him the most. In those moments, his thoughts were with his boys and getting back to them. Since then, Kenneth’s perspective on road safety has shifted in a way only personal experience can bring.

A lot has changed on Tulsa’s streets since this photo was taken at Peoria and 15th in 1924.
What was once wide open is now designed with defined lanes, stoplights, and crosswalks so people can travel with care.

Emily was doing everything right. The road around her and the driver wasn’t, and she tragically passed away.
Take extra care when you’re near traffic, even on the sidewalk. And consider how you can help create change, whether that’s advocating for safer street design or keeping the conversation going like Emily's parents. They continue to advocate for youth in our community.

Crosswalks aren’t always painted, but they’re still there.
In Oklahoma, intersections are considered crosswalks, too. That’s why it’s important to stay alert and be ready to yield to pedestrians, even when there aren’t lines on the road. It’s a small habit that helps us look out for each other and travel with care. 🚙
