I lost myself in trying to please others.

Eventually, I learned something that took me a long time to understand.

Someone elseโ€™s inability to treat you well doesnโ€™t automatically mean you did something wrong. Sometimes you simply triggered something in them that they havenโ€™t dealt with in themselves.

That doesnโ€™t mean you have to tolerate it.

You can acknowledge that someone elseโ€™s behavior isnโ€™t about you and still decide you donโ€™t want it in your life.

Thatโ€™s a big part of what my book, โ€œStand Tall & Take No Sh*t,โ€ is about.

Becoming someone who knows who they are, knows what they will and wonโ€™t tolerate, and has the courage to stand by that.

The goal isnโ€™t to constantly push until you break.

The goal is to build enough capacity that you can carry more over time.

Thatโ€™s human performance.

For the individual, it means performing at your highest sustainable level.

For the organization, it means building people and systems that can perform consistently without constantly operating at their breaking point.

Carry what you can today. Build the capacity to carry more tomorrow.

After being a Division I gymnast, cop, coach, entrepreneur, and someone who has become borderline obsessed with human performance, Iโ€™ve learned a few things about people.

Some from experience, some from watching other people make the same mistakes I did, and some from getting my ass handed to me by life.

These are just a few of my random hot takes.

You donโ€™t have to agree with me, but Iโ€™m curiousโ€ฆ

Which one stood out to you most?

And yes, CrossFittersโ€ฆ I already know Slide 7 is going to p**s somebody off. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Employee health isnโ€™t solely an individual responsibility.

It isnโ€™t solely an organizational responsibility either.

Both sides have a role to play.

You can tell employees to prioritize sleep, eat well, move their bodies, and take care of themselves.

If the culture rewards 12-hour days, constant availability, impossible workloads, and sacrificing personal needs for the job, youโ€™re making those healthy behaviors harder to execute.

You donโ€™t get to demand sustainable performance while creating an environment that makes sustainability nearly impossible.

Agree or disagree? Whatโ€™s your take?

We are really good at judging people by how they show up.

Theyโ€™re short with people, theyโ€™re disengaged, and theyโ€™re not acting like themselves.

โŒ So we label the behavior.

What we donโ€™t always do is stop long enough to ask why.

๐Ÿ’ญ What would change inside your organization if employee health was treated as part of the performance strategy?

I go into more detail in my recent Lead Yourself First article titled โ€œYou canโ€™t separate the employee from the human being.โ€

Every morning, I walked through the squad room and saw our departmentโ€™s core values on the wall. The public saw one version of the organization. I knew what was happening behind closed doors.

That disconnect eventually affected my health and was one of the reasons I walked away.

In this weekโ€™s ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ง ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ต article, I unpack what I learned and why employee health is more than a benefit. Itโ€™s part of the infrastructure that drives performance, retention, and growth.

Youโ€™ll also see the simple foundation organizations and individuals can use to support human performance, and what happens when both sides actually do their part.

Replacing a leader/manager can cost an organization roughly ๐˜๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ their annual salary.

The question isn't just how to retain them, it's whether you're investing in them before leaving becomes the better option.

Healthy people have greater capacity to perform, lead, and contribute at a high level.

Whatโ€™s one thing organizations could do to make their best people want to stay?

08/13/2026

You canโ€™t separate health from performance. โฌ‡๏ธ

We ask people to lead, make decisions, solve problems, communicate clearly, and perform under pressure, then act surprised when declining health starts affecting their ability to do those things well.

The human being behind the job title is part of the performance equation.

If you want great people to stay, investing in the person isnโ€™t just a perk, itโ€™s a business strategy.

I unpack this idea in this weekโ€™s Lead Yourself First article.
