Tomorrow’s the day. The UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge rolls out from the UCI campus in the morning, and we’ll be on course running a SAG tent as a partner for the Challenge’s tenth year.

Check-in opens at 6:00 a.m.
100 miles: 6:30 a.m.
60 miles: 7:00 a.m.
MTB: 8:00 a.m.
35 miles: 8:15 a.m.
14 miles: 8:30 a.m.

Tonight: pump your tires, charge your lights and computer, and lay out your kit so the 5 a.m. version of you doesn’t have to think.

Miguel and his new Madone SL 6. He loved his Domane AL, but he was ready for something faster.

This is the right move if speed is what you’re after. The Domane is built for comfort over long miles, and the Madone is built to cut through the air. Full System Foil tube shaping, IsoFlow to keep some of that comfort, and 500 Series OCLV carbon.

Shimano 105 Di2 shifting electronically and wirelessly, hydraulic discs, and Aeolus Elite 50 carbon wheels that do a lot of the aero work.

We’re partnering with the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge this year, and we’ll be on course running a SAG tent. It’s the Challenge’s tenth year, and we wanted to be part of it.

Saturday, October 10, from the UCI campus. 100% of what participants raise goes to cancer research at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Rady Children’s Health.

Four road routes, from a 14-mile cruise to a full century, so there’s a distance for everyone. There’s a mountain bike route too, but it’s capped at 50 riders, so don’t wait on that one.

Not sure which one’s yours? Check the maps before you pick. They’re on Ride with GPS and Strava, and the elevation profile will tell you more than the mileage will.

Rough rule: if you haven’t ridden 20 miles in a while, the 14 is a great day. The 35 has real climbing in it. The 60 and 100 are for people who already know what 4,000 feet feels like.

Before you roll out:

All cycling routes are 18 and over. Road routes are open roads with normal traffic rules. Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are fine on the road, Class 3 isn’t, and the MTB route is no e-bikes at all.

Want your bike checked first? Inspections are always free, no appointment needed. Bring it in by October 7 and it’ll be ready with time to spare.

Diane and her new Domane SL 6. She came off an old rim brake Trek, so just about everything on this bike is new to her.

Hydraulic disc brakes that work the same wet or dry and don’t need a fistful of lever. Shimano 105 Di2 shifting electronically and wirelessly, so no cables to stretch or gum up. Room for 38mm tires means she can run lower pressure and let the road stop beating her up, and rear IsoSpeed takes the edge off whatever’s left. There’s even a storage compartment in the down tube for a tube and tools.

The jump from her old bike is going to feel enormous. Enjoy it, Diane!

Yuqi and her new Marlin 4. She was excited to get riding, and it sounds like it’ll mostly be fun and fitness.

Good bike for that. There’s a real mountain bike underneath, with a 100mm suspension fork and wide tires, but it’s just as happy on pavement and bike paths as it is on dirt. Shimano ESSA 8-speed keeps the shifting simple, and there are mounts for a rack and kickstand if she ever wants them.

Alex and his new Speed Concept. He’s starting with some triathlons and working his way up to an Ironman.

He did the Tri Fit with us too, which on a bike like this is the whole ballgame. Two and a half hours on cleats, saddle, and stem, plus the part that only matters on a tri bike: aerobar pad height and reach. An aero position is free speed when it fits you and a slow, miserable hour when it doesn’t. He leaves with a written report and 60 days of free follow-ups once he’s put some real time in the bars.

The bike is 800 Series OCLV carbon with IsoSpeed, SRAM Force AXS wireless shifting, a Force power meter, and integrated hydration and fuel storage so he never has to sit up to eat. Aeolus Pro 51 carbon wheels.

Tools, tubes, floor pump, and someone who knows what a dropped chain looks like. Whatever route you pick, come find us on course.

The ride benefits cancer research at UC Irvine. Most people out there have somebody specific in mind when they clip in.

Registration link in bio. And if your bike hasn’t been looked at in a while, bring it by before October 7. Inspections are free, no appointment needed.

Romy and her new Townie Go! She wanted something legal to ride around the neighborhood and to school.

Smart way to go about it. This is a real Class 2 e-bike, so pedal assist and throttle both stop at 20mph, not one of the modified ones. 500W motor, 60Nm, and a 520Wh battery good for about 50 miles, which covers a lot of trips to school. Flat Foot Technology means she can put both feet flat on the ground at a stop sign without sliding off the saddle. Lights, turn signals, fenders, and a rack all come on it.

This is the light, quiet one. TQ’s HPR50 motor puts out 50Nm and assists up to 28mph, but it’s quiet enough most people won’t clock it as an e-bike. 360Wh battery, removable so you can charge it inside.

Aluminum frame, carbon fork, Shimano CUES 10-speed, hydraulic discs, 40mm tires. Lights, kickstand, and a MIK rack already on it. Lichen Green Gloss, better in person.
