Resource guarding doesn’t always begin with aggression. It can start when a dog has constant access to food, bones, toys, or even your attention..and begins viewing those things as theirs to control.
One of the best ways to prevent problems is to be intentional with valuable resources. Bring out a toy, enjoy a structured play session, then put it away. Offer meals, treats and bones at appropriate times instead of leaving them scattered around. Give affection when appropriate , but reinforce calm behavior rather than allowing your dog to demand your attention.
This doesn’t mean teasing your dog or constantly taking things away. It means teaching them that resources come through you, giving something up is safe and cooperation is always rewarded.
Clear boundaries don’t take away the fun. They help dogs feel secure because they understand when resources are available and that they don’t have to always defend them.
If your dog resource guards and you’re unsure how to handle it, call SPK9 for help! (325) 439-8780

The dog in the back is Luna. When she first came to us, seeing another dog meant reacting and wanting to fight. Now she can calmly hold the kennel command and share the room without feeling like she has to do anything about the dog in front of her.
The goal isn’t to make every dog her friend, it’s to teach her that she can safely coexist and to stay neutral. Good job Luna!!
Nobody talk to me. I’m working on something very important. — Jax 😂

Augie is hanging out with us until the end of the month, and we’re so excited to have this big puppy dog as part of the crew! More Angie to love and plenty of time for him to make himself right at home. 🤎
Creed is really just here to run the fetch department. 😂
Creed is currently featured as our Dog Spotlight on the SPK9 website, where you can read more about his training journey and the sweet, observant personality behind all that working dog energy.
His idea of a perfect day is simple: find something retrievable, bring it to a human and wait very intently for the throw. He’s driven, sensitive, endlessly entertaining and most importantly…a really good dog!!!

Boarding looks a little different for every dog. For 11-year-old Charisma, it means carefully timed medications, plenty of peaceful rest, and lots of gentle love. 💛 She may need a little extra care, but she gives back even more sweetness. We’re grateful her family trusted us with such a special girl. 🐾
POV: You were bred to herd sheep, but management handed you a giant ball instead. 😂
This isn’t just play…it taps into natural instincts, challenges the brain, builds coordination, and gives all that working dog energy somewhere productive to go. No sheep, but he’s still taking the assignment very seriously. ⚽️
