Our banner picture is of our beloved Munchie the Clydesdale and JT the burro.....a love story.
Munchie came with his name and while it was initially not my favorite, it did not take long to understand how appropriately named he was. Changing it was not an option because. Munchie was true to his name. He munched on everything vegetarian an was a food connoisseur.
His little companion was JT, a wild burro who was caught in a BLM roundup and sold at auction. JT came to us via a volunteer who had convinced her owner to relinquish custody after the male burro had died. Upon JT'S arrival, JT confirmed what the volunteer had told us, JT did not trust people. JT did not like people. JT showed it and had a good reason not to. Not only had she been hurt but her male burro counterpart had died not long before she came to us. Yes, but she had also been abused and it would take both patience and time to convince her she would never be hurt again.....to gain her trust. We were ready for the challenge and knew it would be a long journey. Ah, foolish humans. We knew nothing about Munchie charm. Within minutes of her arrival JT would find her island of safety. The island? Munchie. The best burro therapist ever.
I do not mean to sound as if I am attempting to write a Disney story and although we knew JT needed an equine pal, we had not expected an immediate bonding. Munchie and been the logical choice....calm, simply a gentle giant. It was decided that JT would join the huge Clydesdale who, at his own discretion, split his time between his always open corral and the breezeway. Munchie was a gentle giant. Kind. Slow-moving.....and, we were right. When JT was released she looked around and immediately walked to him.
JT and Munchie spent 13 years together, freely roaming the breezeway and two corrals that were always open. Munchie quietly passed three years ago, an old man for a horse his size. JT followed him one year later, We love and respect all of our equine residents and miss those who have been adopted or passed, but I admit there is not a day I walk into the breezeway without thinking......without imagining I see the unlikely pair.
