It’s Friday afternoon, and I’m finally sitting in my backyard trying to relax and really think about what happened this past week.
I’m still in shock and awe that we pulled it off.
When Justin, Ben and I started working on this championship, we had a vision. We wanted every seated golfer who came to Arizona to feel like they were competing in a true U.S. Championship.
Looking back now, I think we did that.
Twenty-two seated golfers came together, including seven international players, representing eight countries.
We had four players shoot rounds under par.
We had incredible golf.
And somehow the championship came down to a playoff.
One of the images I know I’ll remember forever was that playoff hole.
Looking down the fairway and around the green and seeing adaptive carts, wheelchairs, family members, friends and fellow players gathered everywhere, all watching Max and Brock battle for the championship, was incredible.
For a minute I just looked around and took it all in.
This entire seated golf community had gathered around one golf hole to watch our first championship be decided.
That’s when it really hit me.
We were doing something historic.
I don’t think we could have written a better ending.
But the golf was only part of what made this week so special.
Seeing all of those adaptive golf carts lined up together was another one of the most emotional moments for me. Knowing everything it took to get them there, then seeing them all over the golf course at the same time, honestly brought tears to my eyes.
And somehow we got through the entire championship without a major cart breakdown. Eric and Jonas did an incredible job staging the carts, watching over everything and making sure the players could focus on golf.
Whirlwind Golf Club was unbelievable.
Chase and his superintendent team had the course in immaculate condition.
Shea became so much more than our contact at the golf course and helped us with almost everything.
Keith and Louie gave us the opportunity to bring this vision to Whirlwind.
Curtis, Mike, Kyle and the rest of the outside staff jumped in wherever they were needed.
Our Rules Officials, volunteers, caddies, player assistants and everyone behind the scenes treated this event like it mattered.
Because it did.
And none of this happens without our sponsors and partners who believed in us before they knew exactly what this championship was going to become.
Most of all, thank you to the players.
You trusted us.
Some of you traveled thousands of miles. Some spent more than a week away from home. You brought your families, your equipment and your trust to Arizona because you believed this could be something special.
I hope you went home feeling like it was.
You deserved the banners.
You deserved the opening ceremony.
You deserved the championship golf course.
You deserved the officials, the meals, the caddies, the awards and the media coverage.
Most importantly, you deserved to be treated like athletes.
For a few days in Arizona, golfers from different states, different countries, different backgrounds and different disabilities came together and showed what seated golf can look like.
22 players.
8 countries.
A golf course full of adaptive carts.
Great golf.
A playoff.
New friendships.
And a piece of seated golf history that I don’t think any of us will ever forget.
To Justin and Ben, thank you for going on this crazy ride with me.
To everyone who helped make this championship happen, thank you.
And to every player who believed in us:
You will always be part of the group that was here at the beginning.
Thank you for making history with us.
See you next year.
