Throwing it back to my Swim Central days — teaching VPK kids their water safety skills. They were so excited for "Test Day" to finally show off everything they'd learned... and get some well-deserved free swim time! 🌊

Proud of our little mermaid 🧜‍♀️

One of my swim students spotted this tiny newborn black racer at the end of our lesson today.

This little snake had somehow found its way onto the scorching hot pool deck and was understandably not thrilled about the situation. For several minutes it struck repeatedly, trying to defend itself while looking for a way out. Knowing it was a non-venomous species, I sat quietly and gave it space. Eventually it settled down and slithered into my hand, accepting a ride to a safer spot and calmly resting there while I carried it to the grass near a pond where it could safely continue on its way.

As temperatures continue to climb here in Florida, it's a good reminder that we're not the only ones looking for relief from the heat. Wildlife will be more active around pools, landscaping, irrigation systems, and shaded areas as they search for water, food, and cooler temperatures.

I'm not encouraging anyone to pick up random snakes or wildlife. If you're not comfortable identifying reptiles, it's always best to keep your distance. Often, simply giving an animal an escape route is enough for it to move along on its own. If necessary, a pool net, broom, or a call to a local wildlife professional can help safely relocate an animal without harming it.

The vast majority of snakes want absolutely nothing to do with us. Most bites happen when a snake is cornered, handled, or feels it has no other option. Given the opportunity, they almost always choose to leave.

Living in Florida means sharing our backyards with an incredible variety of wildlife. A little patience and understanding go a long way toward keeping both people and animals safe.

Well gang, after a nice 13 year hiatus it looks like the cat distribution system got me. I walked into Home Depot for dirt and walked out with three abandoned newborn kittens—barely a few days old.

I’m beyond grateful for the support this little adventure has already brought into our lives—from the Home Depot employees offering to help with medical costs, the Vets office not charging an arm and a leg and a firstborn just to give them a wellness check, CVS pharmacy donating 1mL syringes, to Thomas’s school allowing him to bring the babies during the week so they can receive the around-the-clock care they need.

I swore I wouldn’t get attached… yet here we are. Meet H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Bram Stoker.

It’s truly incredible how babies, no matter the species, have a way of bringing people together.
