in the lab this morning…

Stronger position with the left hand, more structure and width to the right arm, and more spiral of the rib cage in the rotation of the upper body

A list of some keys to playing good competitive golf, or really golf in general. In evaluating my own game and watching other good players/professionals, good golf seems to be the product when these pieces get in order.

In tournament golf you have to be ready for a lot of situations, and to do that you have to have mechanisms in place at your disposal. This is not an exhaustive list… feel free to comment and add to it 👍🏻

Backswing structure with Kenny. His old tendency is common.... the forearms roll clockwise which sends the club head inside and behind and opens the club face. When the forearms move this way off the ball the rotation of the upper body often follows along and the shoulder turn gets flat and the spine tips away from the target setting up compensations in the downswing to strike the ball.

We worked through steepening the rotation of the body and changing the forearm pattern so that his right palm points down towards the ground instead of up at the sky. This keeps his head more centered, his spine in check, and the club face square 👍🏻

Misconception Monday - The Glutes continued...

More context on the Functional and Lateral Lines mentioned in last week’s post.

Perhaps gives a better context to what Tiger was feeling years back when he said he was not able to activate his glutes.

Tune in next week to see how this ties in with the feet.

Worked with Dan on setup and backswing.

More centered at address with the ball, club, hands, and upper body less towards the target.

He had a lot of lateral movement with his lower body which would get his right hip outside his right ankle causing his spine to tilt towards the target. Once he got more centered at setup and we talked about the pivot he was able to make a good hip turn with the hips between the ankles.

With his old setup and backswing he would never really set the club with his hands and arms. At chest high his left thumb would point somewhere behind him (ulnar deviation too long) and his right arm would get away from him and excessively internally rotate. We got his left thumb to point more up (radial deviation) and his right arm started to fold and support the club.

Worked with Joe on a more stable right hand grip, wider right arm, and extending through the right leg to keep the upper body taller.

Joe has a tendency to roll and set the club low and behind the hands early as his head drops and he sinks into the right leg. We first got his right hand connected to the left better in the grip as he has a tendency to let go with his right hand in the backswing and regrip in transition, which creates some inconsistent results as he moves into impact.

With a better connection through the grip he was able get his right arm longer/wider to allow his right leg to extend more so his upper body could stay taller.... tighter transition, better structure to the backswing, more stable strike at impact 👍🏻 @ Willowcreek Golf Academy at Atkinson Resort & Country Club
