Welcome to our third subgroup spotlight: Composites Manufacturing, the subgroup building the car one layer at a time!

The composites group is responsible for the manufacturing of all the carbon fiber and composite parts on the car. This includes parts for groups like chassis, aerodynamics, EPT, and brakes. The group makes parts out of carbon fiber, fiberglass, Kevlar, resin, and other composite materials, while using different techniques like wet-layups, infusions, and prepreg layups. They are also responsible for prepping all the molds made out of tooling board and 3d printed materials for the chassis and aerodynamic parts. This year, composites will be switching up the way they manufacture aerodynamic components, which presents the group with a new and exciting challenge for F35.

This group is led by Jacob Edwards, who spent last year working on making aerodynamic parts by prepping molds and laying up wings. He is excited for the new process of wet laying up the aerodynamic parts this year and working with the new molding material.

This past weekend, we traveled to Brechin Motorsport Park to compete at the Toronto Shootout with both our current electric vehicle, F34 and our 15-year-old combustion car, F19. Both cars cleared technical inspection Friday night and were ready to hit the track Saturday morning.

F19 had a fantastic day of racing, securing 3rd out of all of the combustion cars at the competition!🏎🏁🏆

F34 started the day strong with quick lap times, fast enough to secure second place in the Drivers Championship! Midway throughout the day we had an electrical issue in the paddock while charging. The team diagnosed the problem and got F34 ready to return to the track with our second driver. Unfortunately, while we were in line to go back out, an on-track incident led organizers to close the track and end the competition early. Since our second driver didn’t get to compete, F34 wasn’t able to place in the Constructors Championship.

Through the setbacks and quick turnarounds, we are incredibly proud of our team. F19’s and F34’s pace would not have been possible without the dedication and persistence our members put into everything we do.

Finally, we want to thank the University of Toronto for hosting an amazing event! We can’t wait to be back next year!
