Every year when I arrive early for the Joshua Tree Yoga Retreat, there’s a rhythm to it all.

Unloading the trailer. Setting up the camp kitchen. Raising shade structures in the desert wind. Organizing mats, water jugs, cooking gear, lanterns… all the little things that help create a space where people can land and exhale.

It’s beautiful work.
And it’s busy work.

After working to bring the chaos of creating the camp into harmony, there’s this moment that always comes… when we stop long enough to climb up to Sunset Rock, share a meal, pour a glass of wine, and watch the desert sky soften into evening.

And every year, something inside me softens too.

This quote from Mary Oliver always finds its way back to me out there:

“You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles
through the desert,
repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal
of your body
love what it loves.”

The desert has a way of stripping things down to what’s essential. The sky. The rocks. The people beside you. The simple relief of being present enough to watch the light change.

And that’s part of the practice too.
Not always striving.
Not always fixing…
Just letting ourselves belong to the moment
long enough to receive it.

Yoga and nature have a quiet way of calling us back from the noise of our minds and into the living presence of this moment…
Where we can let the “soft animal of our body love what it loves”

Feeling blessed that I have these 2 mothers in my life.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mommas out there.

May Newsletter 2026 - On Chicks, Caretaking, and the Practice of Showing Up - https://mailchi.mp/petegyoga/may-2026-newsletter

We got three little chicks 2 weeks ago and Quinn is all in.

She recently she woke up early to check on them, then whispered...
“Papa… I’m gonna make sure they don’t have poopy butts.”
Caretaker mode activated 😂

She named them Taco, Enchilada, and Quesadilla.

Watching her care for them reminds me...
yoga isn’t just on the mat. It’s how we pay attention, show up, and care for what’s right in front of us.

Joshua Tree has a kind of magic that’s hard to explain.

The stillness.
The light.
The way the desert strips everything down to what’s essential.

It’s the perfect place to reset.
We’ll meditation, practice, hike, rest, and spend time under some of the clearest night skies you’ve ever seen.

This isn’t just a getaway.
It’s a return.

5 spots left.

“I didn’t know how much I needed this until I was there.”

That’s something I hear after almost every retreat.
Not because it’s perfect.
But because something real happens when we step away from our lives and into intentional space.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You don’t have to be “ready.”
You just have to be willing to show up.

Final 5 spots for Joshua Tree.

Would love to share this experience with you 🌵

DM me if you’re feeling it or check in BIO for more information.

Imagine this…

You wake up slowly.
No rushing. No noise. Just space.

Morning meditation and yoga practice with the sun rising over the desert.
Coffee in silence. Laughter with new friends.
A hike through landscapes that remind you how small - and how alive - you are.
Afternoon chill yoga.
Watching the sunset in community.

By the end of the weekend… something shifts.
You feel clearer.
Softer.
More like yourself again.

We got three little chicks last night…
🐥🐥🐥

And Quinn is all in.

This morning she woke up before her alarm (which rarely happens 😂) because she was so excited to check on them.
She quietly went into the room, spent a few moments just watching them… taking it all in…

Then cracked the door open and whispered:
“Papa…
I’m gonna make sure
they don’t have poopy butts.”

And just like that… caretaker mode activated.

There’s something so sweet about watching her step into this kind of care and responsibility…equal parts love, curiosity, and very serious business.

We’ll keep you posted on the chicks…
and their hygiene status. 🐣✨
