IESI’s program is based on science and logic, not myths and hype. Scientific principles are the basis for our HIT
(High Intensity Training) protocol and our clients
are educated to understand the true nature of
exercise. As a result, the following is possible:
• Improved appearance due to increased
muscle tone
• Enhanced fat loss - especially when
combined with sensible dietary choices
• Better cardiovascular health in a fraction
of the time for so called “cardio” and aerobic
activities
• Improved metabolism by regulating blood
sugar levels which makes reversing or
preventing diabetes and “insulin insensitivity”
(the nations #1 health risk factor)
• Resistance to injury because of better joint
stability and flexibility
• Increased muscle mass which reverses one
of the major causes of aging known as “age
related sarcopenia”
• Higher HDL levels (good cholesterol)
• Better self-esteem and emotional stability
PHILOSOPHY AND PROTOCOL
Our training philosophy is based on the scientific
definition of exercise:
Exercise is a process whereby the body performs
work of a demanding nature, in accordance with
muscle and joint function, within the constraints
of safety, in a clinically controlled environment,
meaningfully loading the muscular structures to
inroad their strength levels to stimulate a growth
mechanism in minimum time. Simply stated, for any activity to be considered
exercise it must meet very specific criteria. The most
important of which is it must be intense! The results obtained from any physical activity are directly proportional to the intensity the activity is performed with. For an activity to qualify as intense
exercise, it must be both brief and infrequent. (i.e.
5-10 minutes of wind sprints done two times per
week is more effective than 40-45 minutes, 3-5 times
per week of jogging, elliptical machine, or any other
“cardio” activity.) It also must be performed carefully
and safely in order to minimize any risk of injury. That is why we choose HIT or high intensity
strength training for our protocol. The protocol
includes performing one set of repetitions until the
muscle group completely fails due to fatigue. Each
rep is performed very slowly which not only insures
the exercise is safe (by minimizing force), but also
makes each repetition much more intense or difficult. Once the targeted muscles are fatigued, it is important
to give the body sufficient time to recover and adapt. Only then will the body be capable of producing the
desired results in the minimum amount of time. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM IESI? Any individual that has reached puberty can benefit from
our program. We have seen life changing results for
men working to improve their strength and appearance
and athletes looking to augment their training regimen. However, women and seniors have even more
important reasons to join IESI. Women are sometimes
hesitant about participating in a strength training
program for fear of building too much muscle and
“looking like a man”. But, women can actually improve
metabolic function, appearance and strength with a
well-designed program. Seniors are often told they are
“too old” and “frail” to perform a strenuous workout. Listening to this well intended, but incorrect, advice to
avoid anything too strenuous can actually contribute
to rapidly deteriorating health. Properly supervised
strength training is one of the keys to aging with dignity. HOW OFTEN DO I WORKOUT? Workouts should brief and infrequent. Our program
adheres to the laws of physics and the science of
human physiology. The responsibility we have as
exercise professionals is finding the ideal balance
between the frequency, intensity and duration of
each workout. The average training session at IESI
is15-20 minutes and is only done once a week. More then once a week doesn’t allow your body to
fully recover and inhibits maximum results. And, this
significantly increases the risk of injury. HOW SAFE IS IT? During more than a decade of working with our
clients, we have NEVER had someone suffer an
injury as a direct result of our program. In fact,
many clients believe they have prevented injuries
because of increased strength and stability. Strict
adherence to scientific principles is the reason
behind our 100% safety record. WHAT ABOUT THE NEED FOR OTHER EXERCISE, SPECIFICALLY "CARDIO"? It must be understood that we are distinguishing
activities that are “recreational” from those that
meet the scientific definition of “exercise.” Without
question, active individuals enjoy healthier, happier,
longer, more productive lives then do those who are
sedentary. Riding a bicycle, playing basketball or
taking a brisk walk are recreational activities. But,
these are not — and should not be confused with —
exercises. The merging of a demanding, structured
event that meets the criteria to be labeled exercise
with recreational activities causes more confusion and
controversy than anything else in the fitness industry. It is the reason that we make educating our clients
about the difference one of our top priorities. WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO WE OFFER? We understand that in addition to exercise, there are
many other factors necessary to a life of good health,
happiness and love. At IESI, we also offer educational
programs for diet, nutrition, natural health care, peak
performance and anti-aging strategies. WHO IS DR. ART PATTERSON? Dr. Patterson has been serving the Staten Island community
for over 30 years. His insatiable thirst for knowledge is driven
by his passion to help others. He has stayed on the cutting
edge of his profession through continuous post-graduate
studies; chief among them is his board certification in
neurology. Additionally, he is certified in clinical nutrition as
well as nutritional neurology, whiplash and spinal trauma,
non-surgical correction of scoliosis, childhood disorders and
non pharmacological correction of ADHD, and of course,
exercise physiology. He is firmly committed to providing his
valued clients and patients with tools that enable them to
make better lifestyle choices.
