Completing a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) route in the Grand Canyon is a bucket-list achievement for many runners. There is no organized event or race to sign up for, meaning it’s a self-supported adventure and you’re entirely responsible for every step of the planning, gear, navigation, nutrition, hydration, and physical preparation.

CTS Coach Darcie Murphy has completed R2R2R twice and helped many athletes achieve their goals on the trail, too. If you’re up for the adventure of a lifetime, some of the best views on the planet, and an accomplishment you’ll be proud of forever, we hope this guide helps you complete your own R2R2R.

Running a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) route in the Grand Canyon is a bucket list accomplishment for many. Here's our guide to getting ready.

As a CTS Ultrarunning Coach and Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, Neal Palles' own races are opportunities to “walk the walk” when it comes to mental performance strategies.

At the Javelina Jundred he faced with a scenario many ultramarathon runners can relate to: To quit or not to quit. We'll save you the suspense, he finished. What’s more important for you, though, are the lessons you can learn from how Neal managed the mental performance crisis.

There’s renewed interest in the idea of strength training for muscular endurance because it was cited as a key training component behind elite victories at UTMB 2025. High-load, low-rep training develops strength, durability, bone density, and tendon resilience. Proponents of low-load, high-rep strength circuits claim they improve muscular endurance. So, if you’re headed to the gym or designing your at-home strength routine, which should you focus on?

Muscular endurance matters in ultrarunning. Coach Cliff Pittman examines whether science supports developing it with high-rep strength training.

Isometric strength training creates great tension in muscles and tendons while joint angles and muscle lengths remain (mostly) unchanged. It's a safe and effective way for ultrarunners to develop greater muscle strength while also building and protecting important connective tissues. Coach Molly Schmelzle, MS, NSCA-CSCS, ACE-PT loves this form of strength training and has the key exercises you should try.

"When Should I Start Training For An Ultramarathon?"

"Start now" may seem like a no-duh, simplistic answer, but it's not flippant. After coaching ultramarathon runners for more than 20 years, from beginners to champions and course record holders, I have learned that TIME is an endurance athlete's biggest advantage.

If you're looking at an event next summer - either your first ultra or a chance at improvement (or redemption) - right now is a great time to start training. Here's why.

CTS Ultrarunning Coach Darcie Murphy answers common questions related to "when should I start training for an ultramarathon?"

At some point, you can't just add more training hours or miles to get faster. Even if you could, there are risks to doing more, including injuries, exhaustion, and burnout.

A wiser way to “do more” is by rearranging the hours you already have so your efforts can be more effective within your existing training volume. This is the concept behind "concentrated volume", and here's how I implement it for runners.

Concentrated volume is a method of rearranging ultramarathon training to increase training stress from existing weekly hours.

Running downhill leads to a lot of muscular damage and wrecked legs. As a result, some coaches spend a lot of time specifically focused on preparing an athlete’s legs for downhill sections of mountainous races. It’s an understandable motive, but research shows less is more when it comes to conditioning legs for downhill running. Learn more in this article.

Downhill running is tough on legs, but it doesn't take much training to improve your downhill running, according to Coach Jason Koop

Fuzhao Xiang's 2025 finish time of 16:47:09 ranks 7th on the list of all-time fastest female finishes at Western States Endurance Run and she finished second in the women’s race for the second consecutive year. A ton of things need to go right over 12 months to achieve back-to-back podium performances at Western States, so here’s my look at what went right and how she did it.

Fuzhao Xiang has a strong chance of becoming the first Chinese athlete to win one of ultrarunning’s most prestigious races: Western States (WSER) or Ultra
