Juneteenth is a day of celebration, it is Freedom Day! On June 19, 1865, federal orders were read in Galveston, Texas to free the remaining slaves that were still being held, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. However, many black men and women were still not freed. They banded together with the Freedmen's Bureau and claimed June 19th - Juneteenth - to celebrate their Freedom! Juneteenth is still unrecognized as a national holiday, use your voice to change that by signing this petition: https://www.change.org/p/united-states-congress-make-juneteenth-a-national-holiday-in-2020
Starting today, we celebrate Black freedom and justice and we encourage you to do so too! Here are a variety of Juneteenth celebrations you can join, share your own events or celebrations in the comments!
