THE HISTORIC TRAINING SESSION THAT ALMOST DIDN'T HAPPEN

It was the mid-90s, an era long before smartphones or the professional structure that modern Jiu-Jitsu has today. Draculino recalls staying home to study for a civil service exam when he received a last-minute call: "Come over tomorrow morning, Rickson is coming to train with us!"

Thinking it was just a prank, he almost skipped it. But when he decided to show up at the beach house, the lineup was mind-blowing. Gathered in one room were some of the absolute biggest names in BJJ history: Renzo Gracie, Roberto "Roleta", Roberto "Gordo" Correa, Soca, Feitosa, a true constellation of elite, hungry battle-tested fighters.

Suddenly, the man walked in: long hair tied in a ponytail, calm demeanor, and that unmistakable samurai spirit that instantly shifted the energy in the room.

What followed became etched in martial arts history forever: Rickson lined them up one by one and submitted every single person in the room.

THE BIGGEST LESSON: It wasn't about brute force, it was about SCIENCE.

Even more impressive than clearing the room was the surreal way Rickson handled the hour-and-a-half-long session. Draculino revealed that his biggest takeaway wasn't just seeing Rickson's unmatched skill, but understanding his training philosophy:

Zero roughness, zero stalling: He didn't use excessive power, jam the action, or force muscular chokeholds.

Putting skin in the game: Rickson allowed the fighters to actually play their game. He let them pass to side control, sweep him, and put him in bad positions.

Finesse and Isometric Precision: Using flawless weight distribution and high-level tactical intelligence, he smoothly neutralized everyone until finding the opening to submit them.

He proved on the mat that to spar with multiple top-tier fighters back-to-back without burning out, you must fight with intelligence, flow, and absolute trust in pure technique.

RESPECT ACROSS ALL ACADEMIES

Critics often argue that he "picked his opponents," but anyone who lived through that era knows Rickson did the exact same thing against the top guys from competing teams—from Carlson Gracie's academy to Alliance. As Draculino put it: "Nobody can say Rickson wasn't all that, because he laid hands on me and the best guys from my generation."

How Renzo Gracie’s Loyalty Changed a Brazilian Boxing Coach’s Life Forever

In the 1990s, Rio de Janeiro’s martial arts scene was deeply divided between wealthy South Zone Jiu-Jitsu fighters and favela-based practitioners. That changed when Renzo Gracie followed his brother Ralph’s advice and walked into Nobre Arte, a legendary gym in the Cantagalo favela run by Coach Claudio Coelho.
Renzo expected hard sparring on day one. Instead, Claudio stopped him:

“You’re a Jiu-Jitsu black belt, but in boxing, you’re a white belt. Old-school trainers say a student must get hit to learn. We believe a student must learn so they don't get hit.”

Renzo humbled himself, embraced the methodology, and became a regular.

THE FIRST TRIP TO AMERICA

When Renzo was booked for an 8-man tournament in North Carolina (WCC 1, 1995), he told Claudio: “You’re coming with me!”

Claudio was terrified. He had never left Brazil, didn't have a passport or visa, and was petrified of flying. Renzo handled everything, getting Claudio a U.S. visa without him stepping foot in a consulate, and spent the entire flight teasing his anxious coach.

LIFE-CHANGING GENEROSITY

Renzo won all three fights in a single night. At the airport, he bought Claudio a 23-inch Samsung TV, a luxury item Claudio still keeps over 25 years later. Days later, Renzo took him to a store and fully furnished Claudio's entire home.

At the time, Claudio worked a steady accounting job. Renzo made a life-altering proposal:

“I’ll pay your full annual salary upfront so you can quit and become my full-time boxing coach.”

Renzo deposited the funds directly into Claudio’s account. After Claudio resigned, Renzo left another surprise at his desk: the keys to a new Fiat 147.
Since Claudio didn't drive, he called Renzo laughing: “Sell this and give me the cash to fix up my mother’s house!” Renzo happily obliged.

Claudio went on to travel the world coaching legends like Royler Gracie and Murilo Bustamante. Nobre Arte became a famous sanctuary where rival fighters put aside their feuds, all built on the loyalty of Renzo Gracie.

Finishing people gets the highlights. Being nearly impossible to finish doesn’t always get the same attention, but it says a lot about someone’s jiu-jitsu.

WHO WAS THE TOUGHEST OPPONENT OF ROGER GRACIE'S CAREER?

If you follow Jiu-Jitsu history, you know Roger Gracie is widely considered the greatest of all time. Dominant, methodical, and surgical, he made high-level competition look effortless. But even for a legend, there was one rival who pushed him to the absolute limit.

Throughout his career, Roger fought iconic wars against titans like Xande Ribeiro and Ronaldo "Jacaré" Souza. When asked about the absolute toughest fight of his life, he doesn't hesitate to single out his most relentless opponent.

"JACARÉ, I WAS NEVER ABLE TO DOMINATE"

Roger and Jacaré met five times, and every single second was a grinding battle. In Roger's own words:

"Jacaré, we fought five times. Every fight with Jacaré was extremely difficult. Every single one. The armbar match where I broke his arm was difficult. The ADCC match where I managed to choke him at the end was an extremely difficult fight...", Roger explained to the PVT channel.

He explained that while he could control other elite opponents on a good day, Jacaré never gave him an inch of breathing room:

"Xande, for example, we fought eight times. I've lost to Xande, but I've dominated him several times, I've submitted him three times... So the fact that I submitted him three times means I was able to have complete control of the fight with him. But Jacaré, I was never able to have control over him in a fight. Never. It was always a hard fight, the entire time, the entire time. The outcome was always decided near the very end; every fight with him was like that."

That relentless intensity and refusal to be controlled are what made Ronaldo Jacaré the ultimate challenge of Roger Gracie's legendary career.

"Was Rickson Gracie REALLY as good as the legends claimed?"

In the 1990s, Rickson was an almost mythical figure. Most fighters only heard stories or watched low-quality VHS tapes of his fights. But what actually happened when the top champions of the era stepped onto the mat with him?

In a interview to PVT channel, BJJ legend Márcio Feitosa detailed the behind-the-scenes moments of a legendary, closed-door training session at Big Head's house featuring a stacked lineup of icons: Nino Schembri, Renzo Gracie, Roleta, Draculino, Soca, Gordo, and Feitosa himself.

Here is what went down behind closed doors:

"I didn't stand a chance..."

Feitosa, who was a blue belt at the time, recalls how fast Rickson caught him using an old-school technique:

"He caught me very quickly and submitted me. I didn't stand a chance. He used a choke from the half-guard, crossing the hand deep in the collar, bringing the other arm over the shoulder, switching the base, and choking from there. People don't use that much anymore."

Dominating a Room Full of World Champions

Getting caught by Rickson was one thing, but what happened next left everyone in awe:

"The incredible part was that he kept training for a long period... I saw all that technique people talked about in stories actually executed. He dominated everyone and submitted everyone, one after another."

A Presence Beyond the Mat

More than just his unbeatable technique, Feitosa highlighted Rickson's character and aura off the mat:

"He is the type of person where, if you get close to him, feel his presence, and exchange ideas, it's not an ordinary day—it's a special day... He always had a comment about courage, about discipline—things that pass a message that strengthens you."
