Cincinnati Teenage Rugby Players have been Invited to Represent the United States at the Rugby Heritage Cup in Australia
No Rugby Experience Necessary: Boys and Girls of All Skill Levels and Athletic Backgrounds Encouraged to Join Cincinnati’s 2027 Team
The Midwest Rugby Development Foundation is forming a boys’ and a girls’ U15 rugby team from Greater Cincinnati to travel to Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, in September 2027 for the Rugby Heritage Cup.
No rugby experience is necessary. The two teams are open to boys and girls born in 2012 or later, from experienced rugby players to kids who have never played rugby or any organized sport. Athletes from other sports including football, soccer, lacrosse and track are encouraged to participate.
Cincinnati is the only U.S. city invited to participate in the 2027 Rugby Heritage Cup, which will feature young athletes from more than 20 countries. The teams will compete in Rugby 7s, the Olympic version of rugby, giving Cincinnati-area children the opportunity to represent their city and country on an international stage.
The Foundation is accepting signups now, with formal practices beginning in winter 2027. Players and families will participate in team gatherings and rugby activities leading up to the trip.
The girls’ team will be coached by Gaby Blocher, a founding member of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Women’s Rugby Team and former San Diego Surfers player. While attending graduate school at Columbia University, she founded the business school’s Women’s Touch Rugby Team.
The boys’ team will be coached by Jon Amster, who began playing rugby in high school before continuing at the University of Cincinnati and with the Cincinnati Wolfhounds. Amster currently serves as Treasurer of the Midwest Rugby Development Foundation.
Scholarships Available
Partial and full scholarships based on financial need will be available to help ensure the cost of the international trip does not prevent a child from participating.
The Foundation hopes the 2027 teams will become part of the legacy of rugby in Greater Cincinnati as the United States prepares to host the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup and 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
No experience required. All skill levels and athletic backgrounds welcome.
