On Saturday, our varsity cross country teams traveled to San Diego for the Mt Carmel Invitational against teams from all over Southern California and Arizona. This marks the 25th time we have traveled to this meet (thank you Alan Walker…class of 2002 for encouraging us to start going to San Diego)
We have had much success at this meet over the years with several top-five finishers in the various age groups and two first places--Emmanuel Simiyu (1st – Sr (2023) and Alexavier Martinez (1st – Jr (2023)
Kelsey Turley joined the club as she "achieved Greenway history" by being the first Lady Demon to ever win an age-group race by taking first of all Division 2 juniors. Other Lady Demons medalists in the senior race included Korina Rivera and Aubry Campbell-Perez.
Dylan Marquez continued his “excellence” in this meet (always top six or better) by capturing an outstanding 6th in the senior boy’s race along with medal winner, Martin Mac.
Then things went downhill as it became too hot and unsafe to run so the meet was cancelled. So much for “cool San Diego” but the trip to the beach helped the rest of the team that didn’t get to run.
Of course, we also had our traditional pre-race meal out on the patio at Luigi’s by the Bay and the Belmont Park roller coaster ride afterwards.

Successful night at the Desert Twilight. Recently our Cross Country team competed in the Desert Twilight Meet under the lights on a golf course. It was the largest meet “ever” held in Arizona with over 6000 runners from 300 schools representing 10 states.
Junior Kelsey Turley ran an “outstanding” runner-up finish against 500 girls in the small school’s division. Her time was the 3rd best ever by a Lady Demon junior. The girls finished 17th with strong showings from Korina Rivera, Aubry-Campbell Perez and Bailey Jefferson.
The Varsity boys ran their “best race of the season” to finish an excellent 8th against 75 teams in their division. Led by Greenway’s #1, Dylan Marquez, the boys had some much improved "personal best" races from Nico Racite, Zane Baiardi, Gonzalo Martinez and Sergio Lopez.
In the small school’s open division, David Clement and Jackson Theall ran personal bests as did Lady Demons Madison Perez and Sophia Cruz. Well done Greenway Cross Country.
It was very gratifying to see some Greenway alumi at the meet Edgar Gomez, Linkin Dyer, Lillie Dyer, Tabian Bailey and Greenway's volunteer coach (Alexavier Martinez). Coach Walker, Edgar and Linkin all ran the community race.
Also very proud to see Greenway's standout Erik Wolf (class of 1997, State 3200 Champ and 3rd in 1996 XC State) there watching his son run in the Junior High race.

Recently our Varsity Cross Country teams competed in the Prescott Invitational. It was a historic day for the Demons as Kelsey Turley achieved Greenway history by being the first Lady Demon to ever capture first in the meet and Dylan Marquez raced to the 3rd highest finish ever on the guy’s side. Kelsey joins Jim Klein (1979) and Jeff Cannada (1981 & 1982) as the only Demons to ever win the #1 race at this competitive meet dating back to 1977.

Our Boys squad finished an award winning runner-up in the sixteen team race. All six runners raced to medal winning performances after Dylan with Zane Baiardi, Martin Mac, Nico Racite, Gonzalo Martinez, Sergio Lopez and Jackson Theall missing the title by a mere three points.

The Lady Demons also had a wonderful day finishing a strong third with Auby Campbell-Perez, Korina Rivera, Bailey Jefferson, Bella Nielsen and Madison Perez all running medal winning races. Well done, Cross Country

Recently, the Demons returned to the scenic Fountain Hills Invitational against teams from all over the state.
Led by Kelsey Turley’s outstanding runner-up finish, our Lady Demons finished a very fine 5th. Girl medalists also included Aubry Campbell-Perez, Korina Rivera and Baily Jefferson.

Our “not at full strength” boys also finished 5th led by Dylan Marquez’s quality 5th place finish. Martin Mac paced the guys along with rapidly improving sophomores Zane Biardi and Gonzalo Martinez.

Our JV Boys finished very well in sixth place led by medal winner, David Clemente and Kori Nielsen while our JV girls place 13th led by Daisy Fizer-Spry and Ana Breshanaj.

Last Friday night, our Varsity Cross Country teams competed in the 44th annual Shawn Kerr Memorial Halftime Meet. Our Lady Demons convincingly beat Washington, Apollo and Independence by placing four runners in the top seven. Kelsey Turley led from the start with Korina Rivera, Aubry Campbell-Perez and Bella Nielsen close behind.

Dylan Marquez paced the guys with a runner-up finish. The Boy’s then placed five runners in the next ten with Martin Mac, Nico Racite, Zane Baiardi, Sergio Lopez and Gonzalo Martinez leading the boys also to victory.

Greenway is the only team in the State to host a meet like this and we are very proud to have done so since 1983. Shawn’s Mother, Pam, has attended every halftime meet since Shawn’s passing. Well done, Cross Country.

Last Saturday our Boys and Girls’ Cross Country teams successfully competed in the Peaks Invitational in cool Flagstaff.
Kelsey Turley ran an "outstanding" medal-winning race to finish runner-up in the Ascent Division. Our Lady Demons took 7th with Aubry Campbell-Perez and Korina Rivera rounding out our top 3.

Our Boy’s Varsity ran very well to claim the "runner-up" team finish in their division beating the Arizona teams but placing just behind a school from Las Vegas. Dylan Marquez placed an excellent 4th along with medal winners Nico Racite and Martin Mac.

Top JV finishers included David Clemente and Iliza Zamora while the top frosh finishers were Jackson Theall and Bella Nielsen.
Congratulations to all the Demons who finished the demanding, hilly course at 7000 ft with personal bests or big improvements.

After lunch, we made our traditional trek to the NAU practice field for some soccer, frisbee throwing and relaxation.

Last week was a big one for the Demon Cross Country team. With heat being too much a factor, we switched the time trial to Wednesday morning and ran the halftime course. It wasn’t the same in daylight without a crowd cheering but the harriers ran their best to show their conditioning on August 19th. Kelsey Turley and Bailey Jefferson finished 1-2 for the Lady Demons and the boys were led by Dylan Marquez and Martin Mac. Afterwards the runners devoured some delicious Dunkin Donuts.

On Friday, they ran the annual Jogathon Fundraiser. This is our main fundraiser to help cover the costs of entry fees, bus drivers, bus mileage, van usage, meet drinks and banquet items. Getting into teams of four or five, they alternated legs of an hour relay.

Prior to the relay, each runner was responsible for getting sponsors for their relay who would donate so much a mile ran or simply contribute a set dollar amount. Now their challenge is to collect the donations or have the donors complete an online process. Many thanks to the parents who were in the stand supporting their son or daughter and to Coach Mrozinski and his wife, Olivia, for having the traditional popsicles after the relay event.

Summer training paying off! Yesterday, we had four Demon runners and Coach Mrozinski continue the long-time tradition of running in the ARR 4th of July Four Miler. Congratulations to Nico Racite and Martin Mac for their second and third place "medal winning" finishes in the 14-17 age group. Sergio Lopez improved his time by five minutes for 6th place and Eryx Salazar dropped his time almost four minutes to place 22nd . Coach M also recorded a PR in reaching his excellent goal. Of course, they enjoyed the post-race hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and watermelon.

At the recent State Cross Country Meet, soph Kelsey Turley closed fast to earn her first State Meet medal. The Lady Demons placed 15th out of 30 teams with Lillie Dyer and Bailey Jefferson leading the pack behind Kelsey.
The Boy’s team wanted a little higher but managed an “acceptable goal” Top Ten finish. Edgar Gomez and Dylan Marquez led the Boy’s team along with some excellent races from Nico Racite and Martin Mac.
Congratulations to both teams on finishing very fine seasons.
The Boys captured the Peaks Invitational (Ascent div), placed runner-up at Desert Twilight (out of 90 teams in the small school division), won the Boulder Creek Mid-Week Invite, placed third at Fountain Hills and finished a very closed second in Sectionals to powerhouse, ALA West Foothills.
The Lady Demons convincingly took back the District Jamboree trophy, qualified for State at Sectionals without their top runner, also won the Boulder Creek Mid-Week Invite, placed 9th at Fountain Hills and won seven medals at the big invite in San Diego.
Individual highlights included soph Kelsey Turley winning a State Meet medal, three runners each placing 6th in the prestigious ASICS/Sun Devil Meet (Kelsey Turley, Edgar Gomez, Dylan Marquez), Nehemiah Llamas winning the Boulder Creek Mid-Week Invite, Bailey Jefferson winning the Frosh District Championships, Edgar Gomez & Nehemiah Llamas earning first team All Section honors and Dylan Marquez, Lillie Dyer and Nico Racite taking second team honors. And both Kelsey and Edgar ran races fast enough to make Greenway's Top Ten All Time 5K Times.

Cross Country Advances to State
Last week at Sectionals, both our Boys and Girl’s teams "punched their ticket" to the State Meet this Saturday.
The boys ran their best race of the year and gave the #2 team in Div III state, ALA Foothills, a run but ended up a close second. The Demons placed five runners in the top 15 with Edgar Gomez (3rd), Nehemiah Lamas (7th), Dylan Marquez (8th), Nico Racite (14th), Martin Mac (15th), David Perez (58th) and Nick Dominguez (59th).
The Lady Demons were without #1 runner, Kelsey Turley, but rose to the occasion to also qualify with their 5th place finish. Lillie Dyer (13th) paced the “up and coming” girls followed by strong performances from Bailey Jefferson (24th), Valeria Garnica (29th), Korina Rivera (33th), Essence Maxey (34th), Aubry Campbell-Perez (39th) and Amelia Chander (66th)
The following received AIA medals and All Section Honors: 1st Team All Section (Edgar Gomez, Nehemiah Llamas), 2nd Team All Section (Lillie Dyer, Dylan Marquez, Nico Racite). The State Meet is at Cave Creek Golf Course. Div III Girls run at 8:55 am while the Div III boys race at 9:45.
