If you have never met me before you should know that I am a total nerd. 🤓 I don’t have as many nerd friends in the dance and fitness industry as I would hope but they are definitely out there. Transparently, we don’t all agree on the importance of education. I hear things like- “I danced professionally so I don’t need to be educated”. OR… “I was a professional body builder so I know everything I need to know.”
I might challenge these ideas to ask, why not both? Performing on a high level gives you both the insight and application that education could compliment even more. Here me out for the three main reasons why I believe so strongly in education in our industry:
❗️Teaching is a privilege and a responsibility. Clients and students are at a high risk for injury while in your care. Why not take the time to understand the risks and how to mitigate those risks?
❗️Both adult students and youth students deserve the opportunity to know “why” they are being asked to do things as well as in what ways the research supports what they are doing. People are smart! Let’s empower them to make choices that impact their goals even when we aren’t around.
❗️As a coach, we need coaches too. We need a support system and a community that like minded people will naturally be drawn to. Whether it’s at a seminar, a conference, through a learning class or a convention, community is a good thing in an industry that could feel ultra competitive instead of supportive at times.
