Some of the most talented players don’t move on — and it’s not because of skill.

They’re the best skaters on the ice.
They’ve got hands of gold.
They dominate in lessons and drills.

But when the game starts… they disappear.

Because they don’t know how to apply what they’ve learned when the game gets fast, chaotic, and unpredictable.

Skill doesn’t matter if you don’t know when to use it.

The players who move on aren’t always the flashiest.
They’re the ones who can read the game, make decisions, and stay involved every shift.

That’s Hockey IQ.

And that’s the difference between looking good in practice…
and actually impacting the game!

These are the type of things we teach inside the IQ Academy!

When you turn the puck over the next time, coaches will notice what happens in the next 2-3 seconds and it’s l crucial to not allowing your opponent a chance at your net.

Here’s what high-IQ players do immediately after a turnover👇

1️⃣ Don’t puck watch
Scan the ice. Find the most dangerous threat before it finds its way in your net.

2️⃣ Protect the middle
Take away inside ice first. Force everything outside.

3️⃣ Angle or contain
You need good body position and time for support.

Turnovers will happen!
Smart responses prevent goals.

Your saucer pass is killing your game.
Not because the skill is bad… but because you’re using it in the WRONG situations.

Most kids float a saucer pass because it “looks elite.”
Meanwhile the defender says “thank you” and closes the gap before it even lands.

If you want to play faster ⬇️
If you want to create real scoring chances ⬇️
If you want your teammates to actually KEEP possession ⬇️
Stop throwing unnecessary sauce.

1) Flat.
2) Fast.
3) Tape to Tape.

Simple = dangerous.

Most players disappear without the puck — and that’s why they never get it back.

Dangerous players stay involved.
They move into lanes, present their stick, and read where the play is going.

If you stand still, you’re not an option.
Show yourself. Stay available. Become dangerous.

Try it next time you’re on the ice 👊

Elite players don’t just receive the puck… they arrive with a plan.
Watch how Macklin Celebrini sees his options on the weak side of the power play. 👇🧠

First, he finds the weak-side seam and makes himself an easy outlet. Stick ready. Eyes up. He’s not drifting, he’s presenting himself to the puck.

Once he catches it on the dot, he reads all three options instantly:

1️⃣ Shoot — but the strong-side Seattle defender is in the lane. High chance this gets blocked.
2️⃣ Slot pass — but the back-pressure defender is closing hard. Risky.
3️⃣ Backdoor seam — the weak-side forward has time, space, and his stick loaded. The D’s stick-skate triangle opens just enough for a perfectly threaded pass.

This is what elite decision-making looks like on the power play:
arrive, scan, assess, and choose the highest-percentage option.

Celebrini doesn’t force the play.
He reads the picture… and attacks the best option the defense gives him.

That’s Hockey IQ.
And that’s why the best players make the game look simple.

Here’s how 90% of players get this wrong in the slot… 👇

Most players crash the net too early, get tied up in traffic, or park themselves where there’s no room to shoot.
They stop reading the play and start chasing it.

Watch #56 Haula here — he does the exact opposite.
✅ He floats with purpose, not panic.
✅ He keeps inside body position and stays a passing option.
✅ He finds the quiet ice instead of forcing himself into coverage.
✅ And when the puck comes, his stick’s free and ready.

That’s the difference between being covered and being a scoring threat.

Most players are in the right area — they’re just there too early or without purpose.

🧠 Smart players know how to create time and space by waiting for the play to develop, not by forcing it.

❓How many did you find ??

Breaking down this sequence from Novak through the neutral zone 👇

✅ Subtle deception: Novak uses a quick stick-and-step fake to the inside, forcing Marchenko ( #86) to cross over once. That tiny fake gives Novak just enough time to beat him wide.

✅ Net drive & recovery: He tries to center for Tomasino ( #53) driving the net. It turns into a loose puck, but Novak stays with it and recovers below the goal line.

✅ Smart read behind the net: Instead of forcing a quick wraparound, Novak stays patient. Down two goals, time running out, his head stays up scanning. He spots Letang ( #58) open at the point and threads the seam perfectly. Letang wastes no time and fires home.

🧠 One rush… and so much thinking in just a few seconds.
That’s the difference between playing fast — and thinking fast.

Did you spot the 2 plays Dylan Larkin used to set up this goal? 👀

At full speed it looks like pure skill — but there’s high-level IQ all over this play.

1️⃣ Deception Stop: He slows down just enough inside the OZ Blueline to buy time and shake the backchecker. That hesitation changes the defender’s angle completely. Which allows Larkin to continue past him.
2️⃣ Head-Up Scan: Coming down low, Larkinalready knows where his teammate is as he’s rounding the corner wall with his head up. He’s scanning before he makes the backhand pass to the slot for a nice smooth 1 T redirection far side!

These two reads create the illusion of speed even while he’s slowing down. That’s next-level hockey IQ to gain the time and space away from the Buffalo Backchecker.

Most players just attack full speed and run out of space.
Larkin slows down to create it!

That’s the difference between skating fast and playing fast. 🧠
