I once said this to a doctor who interrupted me while I was asking a question:
"I understand that you have many years of experience learning about and treating other people's bodies. But I have 60 years of experience living in this one, and that will be respected."
The doctor responded:
"But you're not a doctor."
No, I'm not.
But I am the person living in this body.
That doesn't mean I know more than my doctor about medicine.
It means my experience matters.
We go to doctors because they have knowledge.
We go to dietitians because they have knowledge.
We go to trainers and teachers because they have knowledge.
Experts matter.
But there is another expert who needs a seat at the table:
The person actually living inside the body.
Listen to the experts.
Ask questions.
Learn.
But don't disappear from your own healthcare.
Your experience matters.
