🔥 The Boots That Built a Legend — A MOTO Legends Story
There are motocross relics… and then there are artifacts forged in the fire of the sport itself.
These boots — Roger DeCoster’s Alpinestars OSCARs — aren’t just leather and buckles. They’re a time capsule from the era when motocross was raw, dangerous, and ruled by a man who rode like he had a destiny to fulfill.
They were born in the early 1970s, when riders didn’t have “gear” — they had whatever they could strap on before dropping into a battlefield of roost, ruts, and unforgiving machinery. And then came a quiet collaboration between a rising Belgian racer and a small Italian bootmaker that would change everything.
Roger DeCoster didn’t just wear these boots.
He helped invent them.
He pushed Alpinestars to build something tougher, smarter, and safer — a boot that could survive the brutality of GP motocross. He demanded steel where others used leather. He demanded buckles where others used laces. He demanded protection that didn’t slow a rider down.

The Story of My Roger DeCoster Boots
I bought these boots in the mid‑70s from a Suzuki shop in Somerville, New Jersey — the kind of place where the smell of premix lived in the walls and every poster made you dream bigger. I was just a kid with a paper route, saving every dollar I could. These boots were one of my first *big* purchases, right alongside a used RM125. (Thanks, Joe Colucci.)
For reasons I didn’t fully understand at the time, I held onto them. Through moves, jobs, races, and decades of life, they followed me. Fifty years… and they never left my side.
A few years ago at the National Motocross event at Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Denver, I brought them along hoping Roger might sign them. He was managing the Suzuki team then. At first, he looked at me like I was just another collector trying to flip a pair of eBay boots with his signature.
But when I told him the real story — the paper route, the RM125, the shop in Somerville, the fact that these boots had been with me for half a century — he started smiling. We talked for a bit. It felt like closing a loop that started when I was a kid dreaming of motocross greatness.
These boots remind me how deeply motocross and motorcycles have shaped my life — from racing as a teenager and as an adult, to opening a Yamaha dealership here in Colorado, to building The MOTO Legends today.
