John Lennon and Paul McCartney, two of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, both got their start in Scouting!
More Fun Facts:
It was actually during this 1957 Scout jamboree that Paul McCartney made his first-ever public singing debut, performing alongside his brother, Michael, for their fellow Scouts and Scoutmasters.

John Lennon was a member of the 3rd Allerton Scout Group. During his time with the Scouts, he practiced his mouth organ skills—an instrument that later defined early Beatles hits like Love Me Do.

Additionally, Paul's time doing "good turns" as a Scout in Liverpool reportedly introduced him to an elderly woman who helped inspire the song Eleanor Rigby.

Paul McCartney missed his first scheduled gig with John Lennon and the Quarrymen, the band they were both in before The Beatles, because of Scouts.

Paul later paid tribute to these memories in his 2008 solo song That Was Me, which opens with the lyric: "That was me, at the Scout camp."

The Beatles released a new single today, Now and Then. We spotted this fab shot of their statues in Liverpool. Did you know that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were both Scouts? Read their Scouts story here: https://bit.ly/3QJyZBH

The Home Repairs Merit Badge is a highly practical elective that teaches Scouts how to safely maintain a home. Earning this badge helps Scouts build self-confidence, learn critical safety guidelines, and save money by doing common maintenance fixes independently. Notably, the official workbook outlines that a parent, guardian, or merit badge counselor may supervise the required projects.
*Basic maintenance requirements include weather-stripping a door, caulking cracks, repairing a window screen, replacing a pane of glass, or reconditioning a yard tool.
*Plumbing requirements include clearing a clogged drain, repairing a leaky faucet, fixing a flush toilet, or cleaning a sprinkler head.
*Electrical requirements include locating the main switch box to reset a breaker, replacing an electrical cord, or changing a light switch or outlet.

⚜️ Celebrating the Life of Mark Renner
The Scouting community has lost a truly dedicated Scouter, mentor, and friend.
Mark Renner gave countless hours to Scouting and made a lasting impact on generations of Scouts and Scouters. A Silver Beaver recipient, member of the Bill Hart District, and Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, Mark embodied a lifetime of service.

He was part of seemingly every Wood Badge and every Patrol Challenge, from the earliest setup through the final awards. With his unmistakable Jeremiah Johnson beard and backwoods wilderness look, Scouts naturally flocked to him. They found someone who treated every young person with respect, generously shared his knowledge of Scouting and life, and always brought along his wonderful sense of humor.

Mark will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught, the Scouts he encouraged, and the friendships he built will carry his legacy forward.

Memorial Service for Mark Renner

Mark’s wife, Michelle, has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered in Mark’s memory to the OneLegacy Foundation:

Please keep Michelle, Mark’s family, friends, and his extended Scouting family in your thoughts as we gather to celebrate a life of service and a Scouting legacy that will not be forgotten.

To all of our Scouting families and friends observing Yom Kippur, Western Los Angeles County Council wishes you a meaningful day of reflection.
G’mar Chatimah Tovah — may you be sealed for a good year.

For nearly 15 years, Scouting has been more than an adventure—it’s been a family. ⚜️

Her journey began when her son joined Pack 575 as a Tiger Scout. Along the way, she stepped up to serve as an assistant den leader, treasurer, and assistant committee chair, while watching her son continue on to Troop 609 and ultimately earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Today, she continues that journey as a District Executive serving Bill Hart and the Antelope Valley, helping more young people and families discover the same opportunities, friendships, and sense of community that made such an impact on her own family.

And those families she met nearly 15 years ago? They’re still close friends today—her “second family.”

That’s the power of Scouting: the adventure may bring you in, but the friendships can last a lifetime. 💙

Did you know that one of the world's greatest storytellers was a Scout? 🌟

Walt Disney credited his time in Scouting with helping him develop the leadership, creativity, and perseverance that built his legendary career. In 1946, he was even honored with the Silver Buffalo Award—Scouting America's highest commendation for service to youth.

Here at the Western Los Angeles County Council, we are proud to continue building the same character, confidence, and imagination in today's youth right here in LA. ⚜️

🦅 Meet Eagle Scout Noah!

For his Eagle Scout project, Noah combined his love of animals with a place that has been part of his Scouting journey for years—Hart Park. He created an animal memorial near the pony of William S. Hart, leaving a meaningful tribute for the community.

Hart Park holds special memories for Noah, dating back to his Cub Scout days and events like his Blue & Gold Banquet. From Pinewood Derbies and earning belt loops to visiting local fire and sheriff’s stations, Scouting gave Noah experiences he’ll never forget.

But perhaps the greatest impact was personal. Once shy, Noah credits Scouting with helping him find his confidence, connect with others, and learn how to communicate as he built friendships with fellow Scouts.

From a shy Cub Scout to an Eagle Scout giving back to a place that helped shape his journey—congratulations, Noah! 🦅⚜️

🦅 Meet Eagle Scout Vincent of Troop 583.

For his Eagle Scout project, Vincent gave back to the place that helped shape his Scouting journey—Valley Trails Camp. He built new archery stands to create a cleaner, safer range for the Scouts who will come after him.

“Becoming an Eagle Scout shows responsibility and maturity. Scouting also teaches you real-life skills—how to pitch a tent, start a fire, use a knife safely, and take care of yourself.”

After years of learning, leading, and serving, Vincent is looking toward his next adventure: college and a future career in nursing.

Congratulations, Vincent—and thank you for leaving Scouting a little better than you found it. 🦅
