Opening Day among boat clubs is the annual celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of the boating season. The tradition is believed to have begun in the rich maritime history of the eastern seaboard, where winter snow and ice dictated that vessels be pulled out of water and wrapped in boat houses on land until Spring. In addition to yacht club officers making the circuit to visit nearby yacht clubs, opening day is stacked with events including flags being presented by the Color Guard, dock parties, a Youth Sailing at Ventura Yacht Club racing exhibition, a benediction by the club chaplain, various speeches, presentations, and awards. Additionally, all boats in the yacht club marina are dressed with burgees and flags, adding to the festive atmosphere. The tradition of firing a cannon was believed to be a method to “break up the ice” in colder climate harbors. Since we have no ice, beyond what’s floating in our beverages, the cannoneer still fires the cannon as a celebratory signal to officially begin the boating season. If you’re near Ventura Harbor on Saturday, April 1st, you’ll hear the cannon at approximately 9:25am and again at 9:50am.
Welcome to the Ventura Yacht Club 2023 boating season!
