BEAUTIFUL first club dives of the year on the last Friday ✔️ Stay tuned for a poll in your inbox so you can help choose a date for our April trip 🛥️🤿

We had a choppy crossing with the crazy Santa Ana winds, but they should now make for some great conditions this week — get out and dive!

As usual, thanks for for capturing the vibe of the day with his excellent candid photography

Howdy PDC! Ever wanted to learn more about diving in Antarctica? 🧊 Join us tomorrow for our February club meeting featuring a talk by club member Steve Trainoff about his and club member Gretchen Beckert’s recent trip there!

They traveled with Blue Green Expeditions aboard the boat M/V Ortelius. Steve dove in the icy water and Gretchen snorkeled. As you would expect, Antarctic diving is unlike anywhere else on earth 🥶

Happy new year wonderful people of the PDC! Please join us for our first club meeting of the year Uptown 6-9pm🌀 We’ll welcome PhD student Nathan Grimes from UCSB’s school for a fascinating talk on his research—details on what he will cover below:

“Fishers are exposed to numerous environmental shocks that threaten their livelihoods. Index insurance is a tool gaining traction to help fishing communities during fishery closures and loss due to extreme weather events. However, defining accurate indices and payout amounts is difficult. My research is the first to construct a methodology combing fishing data with environmental data to protect fishers with insurance. I test the structure using the local California Market Squid fishery as a case study. My results indicate a private market for insurance without subsidies could greatly benefit local fishers. Future policy design and considerations to expand insurance to more fisheries will also be discussed.”

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Uptown for our Tuesday October club meeting at 6pm today! Our speaker this month is Dr. Kyle Emery from the at UCSB. Get ready to learn about macrocystis 🌱🌱(there’s no good kelp emoji)

Kyle Emery, PhD, is Research Faculty at UCSB. His research program is focused on quantifying and understanding the ecological implications of coastal ecosystem connectivity, particularly between kelp forests and sandy beaches, and how the impacts of climate change can alter these dynamics via changes to food webs and community composition. His research is also focused on measuring the attributes of and changes in coastal habitats including kelp forests, rocky intertidal, sandy beaches, and dunes using remote sensing (drones, satellite imagery) approaches.
