The Limpkin was almost extirpated from Florida due to overhunting. New laws and conservation efforts prevented this from happening and the population recovered.

Lake Garcia is part of the upper St.Johns River Basin. This conservation land features impounded marshes good for migratory and resident ducks, wading birds and raptors. Limpkin, American Bittern and Least Bittern are possible at this site, as are Purple Gallinule, King Rail, Sora, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Snail Kite and Crested Caracara. Watch for the Bald Eagle, occasional Roseate Spoonbill and our winter resident Osprey as well many more species.

Bald eagles grow to about 2.5 to 3 feet in height, and can have an impressive wingspan of up to 6.5 feet.
