Layers of Protection - NDPA 05/28/2023

Layers of Protection - NDPA Drowning is the single leading cause of death for children ages 1–4. It could happen to anyone, but the risk is greatest for young children.

I wish every public authority and every pediatrician helps with the cause to educate everyone against drowning.
Drowning prevention is key for children survival. 1 drowning is too many.

🌊💙 This Memorial Day weekend, let's honor and remember our fallen heroes while prioritizing water safety! 💦🇺🇸

As we gather with family and friends to celebrate, it's crucial to stay vigilant and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience near water bodies. Whether you're hitting the beach, pool, or enjoying water sports, let's keep these water safety tips in mind:

1️⃣ Supervision is key! Always designate a responsible adult to actively watch over children around water, and never leave them unattended.

2️⃣ Swimming skills matter! Take the time to learn how to swim or enroll in swimming lessons. Being confident in the water can prevent accidents and provide peace of mind.

3️⃣ Wear appropriate flotation devices! Life jackets are essential for boating, kayaking, or any water activity if you're not a strong swimmer. They save lives, so don't forget to buckle up!

4️⃣ Know your limits! Don't venture into deep or unfamiliar waters if you're not comfortable. Stick to areas within your skill level and stay away from strong currents or hazardous conditions.

5️⃣ Stay hydrated and protect your skin! Spend time under shade, apply sunscreen frequently, and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration while enjoying the sunshine.

6️⃣ Avoid alcohol around water! Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination, increasing the risk of accidents. Save the celebratory drinks for after your aquatic adventures.

7️⃣ Be weather-aware! Keep an eye on weather forecasts and avoid swimming during storms or when thunder is heard. It's better to wait for safer conditions.

Let's ensure that this Memorial Day weekend is not only a time of remembrance and gratitude but also a time to promote water safety and prevent tragedies. Spread the word, share these tips, and let's make sure everyone has a fantastic and safe holiday weekend! 🙌🎉

Keeping children safe is a job we all must do.
This message is directed to Grand Parents but anyone should follow.

Thank you The Sylas Project for this information.
In honor to Sylas we work together to end childhood drownings

Many grandparents have backyard swimming pools that are a popular for the grandkids, but before the season starts, be aware of the facts and take proper precautions. Children under the age of five are at the highest risk of drowning.

You can’t predict what a child will do in 10 seconds. Especially as they become more independent. Accidents happen despite how careful we can be. Most drownings are happening in seconds when toddlers and young children find access to water during NON swim-time. Not thinking it can ever happen to you and not taking preventative measures early enough is how these accidents DO happen.

👇💧Here are some tips to make sure your pool is safe for your grand kids before summer starts.

1. ‼️ Install a non climbable pool fence that is minimum 4ft tall with self latching gates. You can also look into covers and nets. I personally prefer pool fences because it prevents children from accessing the pool area and they do not learn to step over the pool surface.

2. 🚨 Install door alarms and a pool alarm. Don’t forget to permanently seal the doggie door.

3. 🏊‍♂️ Make sure your grand children are enrolled in a quality SURVIVAL swim lesson program. These lessons should be teaching children to find air independently without the use of flotation devices.

4. ❌Throw away any flotation devices. Flotation devices are not approved during pool use and even promote improper vertical postures when a child is head up and feet down in water. This vertical position is known as the drowning position.

5. 🧸 Keep toys away from the pool when not in use.

6. 👀 During swim time, active supervision without the use of phones or any form of distraction is a must.

7. 💧Check the water first if a child is missing. A child can lose consciousness and go into apnea in 20 seconds if they were to find water alone.
8. ♥️All grandparents, whether you own a pool or not, please enroll in CPR classes.

9. 📝 Every person at some point will have small lapses of supervision. No one is a robot. In a few seconds, a child can find water alone without the proper layers in place.

I promise your pool will look even more beautiful once it’s safe and can protect those little feet. ♥️
