Looking to learn how to create, or improve your topspin? 🎾

Your racquet needs to travel both upward and forward through contact to generate topspin.

The upward motion helps generate spin, while the forward movement creates the depth that makes topspin so effective.

Here’s a simple drill to help you feel the correct racquet path:

Place a tennis ball against the net tape and use your racquet to hold it in position. From there, practise pushing the ball forward while simultaneously driving your racquet upward along the net.

Focus on feeling the forward push from your non-dominant hand alongside the low-to-high movement of the racquet.

The goal is to develop a swing path that combines spin with forward momentum, helping you hit heavier, deeper shots without sacrificing control.

Want to hit a 100 MPH serve? 🎾

Most recreational players struggle to generate power on their serve because they’re focusing on the wrong things. Jumping higher, swinging harder or trying to get the racket further down their back isn’t necessarily going to produce a faster serve.

One of the keys to generating more power is internal shoulder rotation, which allows the arm and racket to accelerate naturally through contact.

Rather than forcing the racket across your body immediately after hitting the ball, focus on allowing your arm to extend fully, your forearm to pronate and the racket to rotate away from your body. A good reference is Pete Sampras and his distinctive service motion, where the racket tip drops before the elbow during the follow-through.

Here’s a simple drill to practise the movement:

1. Start with your racket raised above your head.
2. Keep your hand and wrist relaxed rather than gripping the racket too tightly.
3. Toss the ball just a few inches above your racket.
4. Make contact with a loose, fluid motion, allowing the racket to rotate naturally away from your body.

Focus on the rotation, keep your arm relaxed and start building a more powerful serve! 👊

Playing through pain might feel like the tough thing to do, but ignoring a persistent injury can end up costing you far more time on court in the long run…

When one part of the body isn’t moving or loading properly, we naturally compensate. Over time, those changes can put additional stress on other joints and potentially lead to further injuries.

That doesn’t mean you need to stop playing every time something aches. But if pain has been lingering for weeks or months, don’t simply keep pushing through it.

Get it evaluated, understand what’s causing it and commit to the rehab you need.

Taking some time away from tennis now could save you from taking a lot more time away later 🤝

If you’re struggling to develop any kick on the kick-serve, this drill is one the best ways to improve.

Serving from your knees forces you to stay sideways for longer, preventing your hips and shoulders from opening too early and helping you generate more snap as you uncoil into the ball.

It also forces you to hit up on the ball, one of the keys to creating a kick serve that jumps high off the court.

If you want a stronger kick serve, start by practicing it from your knees! 🧎‍♂️
