With Misty Copeland – I just got recognized as one of their top fans! 🎉

Others have posted this wonderful photo from the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, so I thought I would include it here, too. Sadly, I never got to meet Cary Grant or Fred Astaire. I did, however, get descriptions of them from Gene. I once asked Gene to give me a one-line description of the people he knew. For Cary Grant, he said, “Charm, charm, charm. Just smiled and sat there being adored by all the ladies.” Gene did describe how his rehearsal practice differed from Astaire’s. He said of Fred: “He’d have a drum and a piano. He’d have the drum for rhythm. I never used one, because I couldn’t stand the noise. I believe him when he said he literally ‘put the dance on its feet’ right there in the rehearsal studio. I never did that. I would take the script and where the writers would believe a dance or a song was called for, I would pick put a song and then say, ‘How does this fit in here?’ You try to meld it into the script itself.”

When Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise won the Best Director Oscar for "West Side Story" (1961), it was the first time that a directing Oscar was shared among collaborators. Robbins is the only individual to win the Best Director Academy Award for their sole feature film directorial credit, and the only winner of an Academy Award as Best Director to get it for a film from which he was fired.
Wise was chosen to direct and produce because of his experience with urban New York dramas such as "Odds Against Tomorrow" (1959). Since he had no experience directing a musical, Wise agreed that Robbins, who had directed the stage version of "West Side Story", would direct the musical and dance sequences. After about one-third of the movie had been shot, The Mirisch Company, concerned that the production was running over-budget, dismissed Robbins. The remaining dance numbers were directed with the help of Robbins' assistants. Recognizing Robbins' considerable creative contribution to the film, Wise agreed that Robbins should be given co-directing credit. Robbins and Wise also kept in contact and discussed the production, with Wise taking on board many of Robbins' suggestions about the editing of the film.
Robbins also received an Academy Honorary Award "for his brilliant achievements in the art of choreography on film."

A 1982 production of George Balanchine's Symphony in Three Movements, captured by Martha Swope. Balanchine's choreography mirrors the propulsive Stravinsky score with angular athletic movements for both the soloists and ensemble.

See why Symphony in Three Movements is one of Balanchine's most celebrated 'leotard' ballets on the All Stravinsky program:
