What is the projected water temperature in late July? What are the regulations on wetsuits for the event?
Any thoughts about race day 2020? Or when we might have an idea of what to expect?
Did anyone find a Profile Designs aero water bottle with a yellow bite valve?? I think I left it behind in transition. Thanks so much in advance!!
Will this race still be held this year as the West Michigan Tri Series in no more?
Meagan Rinck I might do this. 🙈
Want to join me?
Absolutely loved doing this race! Appreciated all the fantastic volunteers. It was very well organized and well-marked courses. Thanks to Ryan and all the sponsors to make this race possible. Glad to participate in a race that benefits the ministry to help inner city kids in Grand Rapids! Would definitely like to do this triathlon again. ☺️
I wrote a little shout out to TriWalloon for this article!! See you in July! :)

The Michigan Senior Olympics are hosting a Triathlon Event. Please share this flyer with anyone ages 50+!
Excellent race, glad we came up this weekend.
Are you racing the Walloon Lake Triathlon? Get the whole family involved with a weekend of racing in Northern Michigan. The Narwhal Swim Team and the East Jordan Community Pool - Connecting a Community are hosting a Youth Triathlon on Sunday, July23rd. https://runsignup.com/Race/Events/MI/EastJordan/SwimBikeRunforFUN
Walloon Lake Triathlon is just a month away! All proceeds go to further our work here at the BSHOP.

I hear from folks that want to do it but are scared of the swim. Well, there is a duathlon option. Other say they want to come but don't have a bike. Bike rentals are available for the race. Some don't like to run. Did I mention there is a relay option?

So, it seems that there isn't a good reason NOT to sign up. So, just do it. Have some fun, get some exercise, enjoy Northern Michigan, and support our ministry. Boom!

Third annual Walloon Lake Triathlon. Sprint distance triathlon, duathlon, and aquabike. July 27, 2019 July 22, 2017
Registration coming soon! TriWalloon is the inaugural Walloon Lake Triathlon.

This first time event will feature a sprint distance triathlon and duathlon. 600m swim, 20k bike, and 5k run. TriWalloon will be staged from the increasingly popular Walloon Village. The lake is pristine and the bike and run courses are flat with some gentle, rolling hills.

100% of proceeds will go to the continued work of the Bridge Street House of Prayer, a Christ-centered urban ministry in Grand Rapids. Learn more at bshop.org.

Operating as usual

Remember that little adventure that we had a couple of weeks back? Well, despite the conditions, we were able to capture a few photos. We were not able to get everyone in the rain, but here a few fun photos that the day.

Photos from Walloon Lake Triathlon's post 07/24/2021

What a day! We held onto hope. If I am honest, there was more than once when I wondered if, after ANOTHER postponement, we were making the right decision. But the constant support and encouragement of our athletes, volunteers, and partners kept us steady. Thank you all for an incredible day. We did it, baby! Thank you all.

We are as thrilled as we are exhausted.

Here are few photos from our fantastic partners at Tommy's.

Lots of communication to follow up on, and a final race recap. Next week.

2021 Tri Walloon

[07/24/21]   Ok folks... the lightning map is looking promising. It looks like we are at the very end of lightning. We are going to give ourselves an extra half hour and look at a race start of 10:30a. If you are home or at your hotel, start heading back to the race venue.

[07/24/21]   Some may think we are crazy... just holding on to hope. The worst weather may pass around 10 or 11. We are pushing back to 10a for now. Stay tuned.

[07/24/21]   9:00a

[07/24/21]   8:30a Race start! Will update as we get closer.

[07/24/21]   Update: With the current forecast and radar we have two options...

Cancel now because there is a chance that won't be able to race, or...

Hold onto hope until the last minute because we might be able to race.

We are choosing the second option. Transition will still open at 5:30a, with a target race start at 7:30a. We will update again at 6:30a regarding a potential postponement. If we need to postpone, we will do so in half-hour increments. Feel free to come setup and hold onto hope with us.

[07/24/21]   Thunderstorms forming to the NW. Currently raining in the village.
Packet pickup will still open at 5:30a. We will update about the start time at 5:30a. Wish we had more certainty for you.

Water and Weather Update!

The current water temp is about 75 degrees. Wetsuit legal, yet very comfortable if you don't have one. Your choice tomorrow.

We continue to watch the weather forecast very closely. Like, every fifteen minutes. The forecast is still j***y, but the radar is clear. At this point, we are proceeding as normal with a 7:30a swim start. We will be watching the weather closely through the evening and into the morning. If thunderstorms develop overnight, we have a window to postpone the race all the way to 11a. We will do everything in our power to make the race happen. We will not, however, risk athlete or spectator safety. We will wait for a safe window for the swim if we are facing storms in the morning. Again, we have a hard stop at 11a. We will update athletes via FB and email this evening and early in the morning. In the event that we need to postpone, we will also use email, FB, and announce that on start if the transition is already open (5:30a)

Stay tuned. Keep praying. See you tomorrow.

Race week!

"Week 11 is race week, it's finally here. For anyone not doing Walloon Lake tri the workouts are still beneficial for you as they provide a chance for recovery from the previous hard weeks of training."

Huge shoutout and thank you to High Gear Sports for helping us out in a pinch. Not only will they be helping with race-day mechanical support, but they are offering a 20% discount on all running shoes for our athletes! 20%! Just show up before or after the race with your race bib and they will hook you up.

A great local race is dependent on the support of great local businesses. High Gear is a great example. Due to a miscommunication on our end, we had an "uh oh" moment when we realized that our bike support was not going to be able to make it on race morning. With a single phone call, High Gear graciously agreed to step in and help out... and offer a discount to our athletes. That is "above and beyond" service.

Give these guys a like on FB, stop by their shop in Petoskey, and please be sure to give them a huge thanks next Saturday.

TriWalloon 2021 registration is almost full!

We are shuffling our event caps a bit to maximize our participation. We reduced our aquabike, duathlon, and relay caps to get folks from our triathlon waiting list into the race. We will continue to shuffle a bit as demand requires. However, we have physical limitation that caps our overall participation, and we are almost there.

Sign up today! Also, if you are currently signed up and know that you are not going to make it on July 24, please consider letting us know ASAP so we can open up for more folks.

Week 5 of training tips with Eric Abbott coming at'cha!

"Week 5 is back to work after some well-deserved recovery days. This is the first week in another 3-week training block. We keep the high intensity Tuesday bike but are not adding a Thursday high intensity run. In addition, the Sunday long runs are increasing in volume. Remember to respect the Zone 2, aerobic work and keep that conversational."

Just finishing up some pre-race meetings. Everyone up here is super excited for TriWalloon 2021. With restrictions continuing to ease, we are hopeful that we will be able to run our event with a high degree of normalcy. We may even be able to increase our capacity slightly from previous years. However, we are currently about 90% full. So, if you are thinking about signing up, don't think too much longer as we will likely hit our cap very soon. And stay tuned to your emails for pertinent race updates soon. See you here, July 24!
