Summer Nutrition: Enjoying Cookouts Without Sabotaging Progress
Summer means cookouts, family gatherings, graduation parties, vacations, and holidays. Many people worry that enjoying these events will ruin their progress. Fortunately, that's rarely the case.
What causes setbacks isn't a single meal. It's allowing one meal to become a weekend of poor choices followed by weeks of inconsistency.
The first strategy is to prioritize protein. Grilled chicken, burgers, steak, pork, and fish can all fit into a healthy nutrition plan. Protein helps control hunger and supports muscle maintenance.
Second, fill your plate with fruits and vegetables whenever available. Summer offers some of the best produce of the year, including watermelon, berries, corn, tomatoes, and salads.
Third, enjoy your favorite treats in moderation. Have the cookie. Enjoy the dessert. Just don't treat every item on the buffet table as a requirement.
Another helpful strategy is to avoid arriving hungry. Eating a protein-rich snack before an event can help prevent overeating later.
Most importantly, remember that nutrition is measured over weeks and months, not individual meals. One cookout won't make you gain significant weight, just like one healthy meal won't instantly transform your body.
Enjoy the company. Enjoy the food. Stay active. Then return to your normal routine the next day.
Healthy living should enhance your life, not prevent you from participating in it.

Nutrition while traveling doesn't need to be all-or-nothing. Focus on simple habits such as prioritizing protein, drinking enough water, and including fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Enjoy local foods and special treats without guilt, but remember that every meal doesn't have to be an indulgence. A balanced approach allows you to enjoy your vacation while still supporting your goals. The most successful people aren't perfect during vacationsβthey're simply consistent enough to avoid starting over when they return.

Three weeks down, and the progress has been incredible! πͺπ
It's been a privilege to work with the St. Marys Cross Country team this summer at Functionally Intense Training. Over the past three weeks, these athletes have consistently shown up ready to work, bringing great attitudes, outstanding effort, and a willingness to push themselves every session.
They're getting stronger, moving better, and building the foundation that will help them compete this fall. Just as impressive as their physical progress has been the way they encourage one another and embrace every challenge.
Thank you to the athletes and coaches for trusting FIT to be part of your summer training. We can't wait to see all your hard work pay off this season. Keep showing up, keep working hard, and keep getting better!

Many people fear losing all their progress during a vacation, but maintaining fitness is easier than you might think. Walking, hiking, swimming, and short bodyweight workouts can help keep your body active while you're away. The goal isn't to train at maximum intensity every day. It's simply to maintain healthy habits. Vacations are meant to be enjoyed, and incorporating movement into your trip can help you feel better, recover faster, and return home ready to continue your fitness journey.
