WE WILL NEVER FORGET. 🇺🇸
25 years ago, our family watched our Dad and his co-workers at Teamsters Local 456 pack small coolers, maybe a change of clothes, and drive straight toward the wreckage that very same afternoon. There was no definitive plan. They were simply there to help, however they could.
Before nightfall, they reached 46th and 12th, across from The Intrepid, awaiting instructions. The amount of people and equipment being brought in was surreal. One of his co-workers described it as “something out of a movie.”
When they reached Ground Zero, they were stationed outside St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, which had been designated as a storage area for the Salvation Army and Red Cross. At one point, Mayor Giuliani thanked them, and on day two, our Mom joined Dad to support him.
Their purpose was simple: to help.
Soon, the debris removal began. Load after load, their dump trucks traveled back and forth to the yard. They slept in their trucks, if they slept at all, and in between their selfless work, they would occasionally check in with their families.
These pictures may not be crystal clear, but the memories are. We remember our parents’ courage and determination to help their community, stand with the Teamsters, and support the NYPD, FDNY, and all the brave teams working tirelessly to manage the wreckage.
25 years later, we remember. We honor them. And we will never forget.
