Warm up your home practice on these cold days.
If you are yearning for a warmer practice but aren't ready to step back into the studio try some of these things you can do at home.
Try herbal teas, non-dairy hot chocolate or warm non-dairy spiced milks an hour to 30 minutes before your practice.
Cardamon, cinnamon, cayenne, peppercorn & grains of paradise, ginger, or star anise all have warming properties. They can be found in teas like chai or herbal spiced orange teas or added to other warm drinks. (I don't recommend dairy before a practice as it can increase mucus production.)
Try a hot shower or bath. Especially after a long day this can be a way to begin to let your day go.
Try moving a little before the practice. Begin to increase your heart rate by a few laps around the house or a few trips up and down the stairs. No need to push hard, just get moving.
Maybe try adding a little humidity. As we begin to turn on the heat in our homes the air dries out. Humidity adds that nice warm hug effect at the studio so try it in your home practice space. 35- 40% humidity is a great level to start your practice at, your body working will continue to increase the heat and humidity in your practice space.
If possible don't set your self up in the coldest, largest place in your house. If you have no choice, maybe wear breathable layers to capture your body heat while you practice.
Breathe. Your breath can be your thermostat. Breathing in and out through your nose. Even breaths and exhaling like you are fogging a mirror can help build heat while you practice.
Most importantly connect to your body and enjoy the space you do have. You can't completely recreate a studio experience so connect to your new found home practice. Show gratitude to what you have created, a sanctuary for you to connect to yourself.

530 am practice starts my day with presence. I find a little more calm and a chance to notice the little things, the details.
Here, getting some work done, I can take my eyes away from the computer screen and see the way the sun shines in, reflecting light off the floor and casting shadows. In every room, through every window, the one source of light plays differently.
Ahh.
