The Importance of Rolling it Out
Aspirations, passion, dreams, and goals.
We all have have them. That is one reason why we are here: to develop, improve, and maintain our performance. And this occurs on so many levels.
To pursue those paths we must first take a look at our daily lives and those repetitive movements that we do and feel every day.
Think about it. How many hours do you spend sitting at your computer in a day? Looking down at your cell phone? Which side do you carry a backpack, purse, briefcase, the groceries? And which hand is free to hold the keys or open the door? How many hours a day do you drive in your car or sit in an airplane? And if you enjoy sports: tennis, swimming, golf. And I'm not forgetting the Equestrians out there!
What we have in common is repetitive movement or sustained body position that requires more work out of some muscles therefore becoming over active or tight: while others are not used effectively becoming under active or lengthened.
With this repetitive movement and tightness of muscles knots or trigger points can develop within that muscle. To help alleviate those trigger points the first step taken is to apply slow pressure and holding that pressure to those points to help release the tension starting with a foam roller.
The technical name would be Self-Myofascial Release. (SMR). Or Foam rolling.
By identifying those tight muscles and addressing the trigger points we will help relax the muscle. Becoming more flexible, improve our range of motion around joints, improve muscle balance and posture through functional and dynamic movement, and reduce risk of injury.
The next step Stretching....
