Jeans and a simple top are an easy start. Then comes the question: what do I put over it?

Here, I’ve paired an olive ribbed top with an army jacket in a similar shade.

If we were in the fitting room, I’d point out the textures. The ribbed knit and the jacket’s seams and pockets give you interest without needing another color or a print.

I’ve tucked the top so the brown belt shows and left the jacket open so you can still see the waist. The belt adds a little warmth and breaks up the green and denim.

Try this with what you own: choose a top and jacket in similar shades, then let the different textures do some of the work.

Save this for your next jeans-and-a-top morning. đź’›

Some mornings, you want to look pulled together without feeling dressed up.

This is a combination I’d reach for: tan trousers, a striped shirt and a navy blazer.

Here’s what I’d point out in the fitting room. The blazer gives the outfit structure, while the lighter shirt and trousers keep it from feeling too heavy. Tucking the shirt lets the belt show and gives the outfit a clear waist.

The brown belt adds a little warmth against the blues. Familiar pieces, but each one has a job.

You could wear this to work, lunch or an appointment where you want to feel a little more polished.

Save this for a morning when you want getting dressed to be one less decision. đź’›

Before you put your dresses away, try one with tall boots and a dark denim jacket.

Here’s what I’d point out in the fitting room: tying the waist gives this dress shape, and the tall boots make it feel ready for fall.

The dark denim jacket adds another layer of structure. Because the colors are close, it feels pulled together—and a little more elevated.

Then the statement necklace brings interest up around the face and gives the solid dress a finishing touch.

Same dress. A different combination. That’s where your closet gets interesting. 💛

Save this and try it with a dress already in your closet.

Off to the VMFA fashion show, with a Swinging ’60s theme—and I didn’t buy one thing.

I pulled out my black dress with the feather detail, added my leopard jacket and grabbed my fringe bag.

If we were standing together in your closet, this is where I’d start: what do you already have that could work?

You don’t have to recreate an entire decade. A few details can give a nod to the theme and still feel like you.

These pieces weren’t new. Wearing them together made them feel different. That’s the fun of taking another look at your own closet. 💛

Save this for your next “what am I going to wear?” invitation.

Some days, you just want to keep it simple. Jeans, a sweater, and out the door.

Here’s what I’d point out if we were standing next to each other in the fitting room: the cable sweater is classic, and the flare jeans give it a little update.

The cream booties pick up the cream in the sweater. That repeated color helps pull the outfit together. Add a brown belt for a little contrast, and you’re dressed.

Nothing complicated. Just a few choices that make simple look intentional. đź’›

Save this for your next jeans-and-a-sweater day.

After 20 years of styling thousands of women, I’ve learned that an outfit is often where the conversation starts.

You’ve seen me here sharing outfit ideas, adding a blazer, rolling a sleeve, getting ready for the day.

Today, I want to share a little of the story behind all of that.

For 20 years, I owned a women’s boutique. Women came in looking for clothes, and we got talking. About changing bodies. Children leaving home. Starting over. Wanting to feel like themselves again.

I was living my own version of those conversations, too.

I wrote Behind the Button about my journey through life and fashion, the women I met along the way, and what those experiences taught me. There’s practical style wisdom woven through it, just like there is here.

Now I’m sharing a digital edition with a new personal letter about my life today and this next chapter.

If something I’ve shared here has felt familiar, you might find a little of yourself in these pages. 💛

My book, Behind the Button, is available through the link in my bio.

After 20 years of styling thousands of women, I’ve learned that most women don’t need more clothes.

They need to understand what’s missing.

Sometimes an outfit is perfectly fine on paper — jeans, sweater, boots — but when you put it on, it just doesn’t feel finished.

And that’s usually when we start buying more.

Another sweater.
Another pair of jeans.
Another thing that somehow doesn’t solve the problem.

The answer is often much smaller: proportion, shape, color, the right finishing piece — or simply knowing what works for you.

That’s why I created my free Style Assessment.

It helps you figure out where your wardrobe is getting stuck so getting dressed can start feeling easier.

Comment STYLE and I’ll send you the assessment. 💛👇

Casual pieces don’t need replacing. They need a third piece. 🤍
â €
Here’s the fix:
✨ A structured blazer pulls it all together
✨ Pop the denim collar so it frames your face
✨ Flip the shirt cuffs over the blazer sleeves
✨ A belt defines your waist
â €
Same shirt, same pants. Completely different feeling.

A cozy sweater shouldn’t swallow you. 🤍
â €
Three things make this one work:
✨ The V-neck draws the eye up to your face
✨ It ends at the hip, not the thigh
✨ Wide-leg jeans balance the volume, so nothing looks sloppy
â €
Comfortable and still put together. That’s the goal.
