Why is it good to strength train one side at a time? Like single arm chest press and cable flies?

Training one side at a time is called unilateral training and has a lot of benefits that you don’t always get with bilateral exercises (using both arms together). Exercises like single-arm chest press, single-arm cable flies, split squats, and single-arm rows are great for this.

Here’s why:

Fixes strength imbalances
Most people naturally have one side stronger or more coordinated. Training one side at a time helps prevent the stronger side from “taking over.”

Improves core activation and stability
Your core has to work harder to keep your body from rotating or shifting. A single-arm chest press especially lights up the abs and obliques.

Better mind-muscle connection
It’s easier to focus on the working muscle when training one side alone. People often feel chest activation better during single-arm cable flies.

Helps with injury prevention and rehab
Unilateral work can expose weaknesses, poor control, or mobility issues before they become injuries.

Improves athletic performance
Real-life movement and sports are rarely perfectly balanced. Running, throwing, pushing, carrying, and rotating all rely heavily on single-side strength and stability.

Greater range of motion
Single-arm movements often allow a deeper stretch and fuller contraction compared to machines or barbell work.

Can reduce joint stress
Sometimes shoulders, elbows, or low back feel better with unilateral exercises because your body can move more naturally.

For chest specifically:

A barbell bench press is great for overall strength.

Single-arm presses and flies are amazing for stability, symmetry, muscle control, and chest engagement.

A really effective program often combines both bilateral and unilateral training.
