Shame in recovery isnāt one thing. Itās layers - and it can take years to sort through all of them.
Thereās the external layer: the stigma, the people who tell us our choices in active addiction define us. Forever. (They donāt.)
Thereās the internal layer: the guilt that surfaces when we remember our own actions, behaviors, intentions - and the quiet belief that we must be bad people. Forever. (We arenāt.)
And then thereās the layer most people never talk about: whatās stored in the body.
In active addiction, many of us live in fight-or-flight for years, sometimes decades. When we stop drinking or using, that state doesnāt just disappear - it stays in the nervous system. It shows up as anxiety, anger, sadness, shame, guilt, low self-worth. For some, fight-or-flight isnāt even tied to the addiction itself - itās all theyāve ever known, wired in from a childhood that never let them shut off.
This is why insight alone doesnāt heal it. Until the body is actually allowed to exit that survival state - to relax, to come back into balance - we canāt fully tell whatās internal and whatās external. Weāre just reacting from the same stored place.
Thatās the work at Illuminating Holistic: giving your body a real environment to shut off.
Helping you identify whatās stuck and where.
Letting you feel - maybe for the first time - what regulation actually feels like.
If youāve never known what regulation feels like - this is your chance to find out. āØāØWhether itās one session to finally exhale, or three months to rebuild from the ground up in Recovery to Radiance - the body work is the same: come home to yourself. Book a session or DM āRADIANCEā to start.
