Recumbent Electric Bike Conversion 01/28/2015
Photos from Long Beach Electric Bikes's post 01/28/2015

With his left arm missing at the elbow and legs that are no longer able to pedal, Herb, at 300 lbs, decided it was time to convert his beloved recumbent bike to electric power. It was an especially interesting project. Some recumbents are designed with one wheel in front and two in back. Herb's has two wheels in front and one in back. Steering is by the front wheels. Note in one of the photos that twin brake handles are located on the right handlebar so that he can operate the brakes with his one right hand. We mounted our standard thumb throttle just in front of the brake handles. And, of course, he also steers the bike with that same right arm. Since he is unable to pedal, we suggested replacing the pedals with a foot rest, but Herb wanted to retain the bicycle look. We mounted a 750-watt motor on the rear wheel and a 36 volt, 14Ah lithium battery on a rack above the wheel. The last we heard from Herb was that he was loving his electric recumbent. Thanks Herb.
