The Theatre Antique d'Orange in the Vaucluse was built in the 1st century BCE and has the only surviving stage wall of any Roman theatre, creating an acoustic environment of extraordinary quality still used for the annual Chorégies opera and music festival each summer.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most complete Roman theatres in existence.
Entry to the theatre costs around 13 euros and the summer festival tickets cost from 30 euros.
Those who attend a Chorégies performance in July with the extraordinary Roman stage wall illuminated behind the performers and the warm Provencal night above describe it as the most architecturally extraordinary and most atmospherically perfect performance experience available anywhere in France.
