In February 1994, they crossed North America and played every team in the old IHL — 14 games, 25 days. One night: a 10-1 loss. The next: a 6-4 win. That’s how the whole tour went.

Final record: 2-9-2. Two guys on that roster went on to win 4 Stanley Cups between them — Sergei Brylin (3x champion, New Jersey Devils) and Nikolai Khabibulin (2004 champion, Tampa Bay). Hockey is weird.

The scoreboard forgot them. Pittsburgh and Moscow never did.

In 1917, the Seattle Metropolitans made history as the first U.S. team to win the Cup—months before the NHL began.

The first outdoor game in NHL history was played inside a prison.

Marquette Branch Prison, Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Alcatraz of the North. In the early 1950s the inmates built a hockey program — a real one, with a schedule and a record and a regulation rink they built themselves.

February 2, 1954. Howe. Lindsay. Sawchuk. Six hundred men watching from the yard, everyone in the building except solitary.

18–0 after one period. Then they stopped keeping score, mixed the rosters, and Red Wings players finished the afternoon in Pirates sweaters.

The inmates gave Detroit a trophy: a refuse bucket, the kind used in cells with no plumbing. They called it the Honeypot. Then they cooked dinner in the chapel and paid for the whole day out of their own welfare fund.

Two months later Detroit won the Stanley Cup. They kept that one too.
