Our American Independence is fragmented - Our American Freedoms are fragmented. Fragments of freedom reached slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation by way of news “that all persons held as slaves are and henceforward shall be free.” Fragments of freedom found in the Fourteen Amendment to the Constitution in 1868, 5 years after the emancipation proclamation, found their way to African Americans by way of rights to citizenship....

I couldn’t be prouder of this brilliant, kind, thoughtful, studious, and exceptional young lady. Today, she started at Wilmer Hale as a Summer Associate and I wasn’t crying. 😭 Elizabeth, I’m so grateful that God blessed me with a front row seat to watch you become all He created you to be. As you engage in even more challenging work, I can’t help but marvel at God’s goodness - that you would go from one incredible law office to an incredible law firm. Keep soaring! I love you and I’m so so proud of you. 😍😘❤️

Today was so exciting that I forgot to take a picture. This pic is from a Nationals’ game last month that Elizabeth’s entire office attended. Her boss asked her to bring her mom. And Elizabeth laughed out loud and said, “Oh, she would love nothing more.” 🙈 It’s no secret how much I love Georgetown - always will! I half-watched the game as I listened (teary eyed) to Elizabeth’s colleagues tell me stories about how wonderful she is and how lucky they are to have her. 💙💙💙

Some things never change. When Elizabeth came home from school, she’d tell her jajja (grandma) all about her day. Today I heard snippets of a conversation I’ve come to know so well [whenever Elizabeth told her grandma about her day, it would be my second time hearing the story, albeit grateful for details I missed as I concentrated on driving her home], as she told her jajja about her first day as an Associate. Where has the time gone? 🙏🏾❤️

Congratulations to my niece Krystal for getting into the Tufts Pre-Med program on a full scholarship! We are all extremely proud of you. Your future patients will be lucky to have a doctor with your heart, wit, and sense of humor. 😂😂😂 I still don't understand the math you do (she’s a math master) but so tickled that you do it and still have time to take goofy pictures of your auntie.
❤️❤️❤️

Happiest of birthdays to this incredible, thoughtful, kind, generous, patient, loving, studious, clever, funny, compassionate, empathetic, and all-around amazing woman of God. I wanted to write a long hearty birthday message but you making your own birthday cake (yeah she bakes too which means that dowry price keeps going up) 🤣 I digress, and all the fun/silly fun things we did today, made the time get away from me. Moreover, 24 years have felt the same way. The years have filled my heart with my greatest joy - they have felt long and short all at the same time. I’m so grateful that God blessed me with you. Elizabeth, you’re like a layered cake that God has allowed me to enjoy. Here's to many many more layers of who God is making and molding you into. I’m so proud of the woman you are and tickled to have a front row seat to the woman you're becoming. 💃🏾 I love you with all my heart. Cheers to 24! to my 💕💗❤️
Ps. I unashamedly grabbed this photo off the birthday girl’s story because I don't have any photos from today 😭
Ringing in the with my mom and daughter didn't have the pomp and circumstance from past, but it had the most powerful tool we could enter #2021 with; prayer. My prayer for you is that this year is filled with hope and unbridled joy as your resistance. Blessings and Happy New Year to you and yours!!! 🙏🏾❤️

Celebrating my daughter's birthday in one of her favourite cities circa January 2020. It feels like a lifetime ago - I feel as though I’ve lived 100 years since. Our lives were turned upsidedown by an unseen enemy yet so tangible he/she/they can be warded off by wearing a , avoiding (i.e. this one in ), and .

I used to love bar swinging when I was a young girl. As the blood flowed to my brain I was thrilled with my balance as one leg was tucked under the other, creating the knot that kept me from falling and breaking my neck every time I spun up and down the metallic bar. After the thrill came the lightheadedness due to my small inverted frame, then my brain cells (what was left of them) would warn me to abort the show-off mission because a few minutes longer I would surely fall and make my pinafore dirty. Oh and Sharline couldn't have that - I could break my neck but not dirty my pinafore 🤦🏾♀️🤣 My Buganda Road Primary School peeps can attest to this.

Anyway, as continues to invert our lives, let's be smarter than the . Let's follow the that will lead us back to a worry-free crowded street in (insert) your favorite city.

As you may have experienced, when hanging upside down, any unsecured items will fall out of your pockets. I’m grateful for the things that have fallen off of me and the people that have fallen away during this time. I have learned to secure the important things and relationships. And in I’ve found creative ways of securing my relationship with my . What are some of the ways you have secured your relationship/s with your child(ren)? Please let me know in the comments. 😘

As our head learning during is not the same in every American household. Please see an important story by about the social economic impact of Covid. When a has to decide which does their first because they have one , something is terribly wrong with our system. I’m afraid the outcomes of disadvantaged children will further marginalize those children into adulthood. We must make sure . I’m going to contact my senators and and to ask them to author a bill that puts a computer in the hands of every child. I ask that you do the same with your representatives 🙏🏾
