How good was Lee Labrada, really?
In an era dominated by some of the biggest names in bodybuilding history, Lee Labrada quietly built one of the most remarkable careers of the Golden/Silver Era.
Labrada won the 1985 IFBB World Amateur Championships, turned pro, and won the Night of Champions in 1986. Just one year later, he finished 3rd at the Mr. Olympia.
And then came an incredible run.
From 1987 through 1993, Labrada finished in the top four at the Mr. Olympia seven consecutive times.
He was:
- 3rd in 1987
- 4th in 1988
- 2nd in 1989
- 2nd in 1990
- 4th in 1991
- 3rd in 1992
- 4th in 1993
He also won numerous Grand Prix contests around the world, including England, Finland, Holland, Greece, Spain, and the Night of Champions.
Yet despite all that success, Labrada never won the Mr. Olympia.
That makes his career particularly fascinating. He wasn't the biggest man onstage, but his symmetry, proportions, conditioning, presentation, and incredibly tight waist made him one of the most distinctive physiques of his generation.
And remember the competition he was facing: Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, Shawn Ray, Vince Taylor, Rich Gaspari and many other elite bodybuilders.
Labrada was also a major magazine star of the era, appearing on numerous covers of Flex, Muscle & Fitness, IronMan, Muscle Mag International, and Muscular Development.
So here's the question:
Was Lee Labrada one of the greatest bodybuilders who never won the Mr. Olympia?
We'd say there's a very strong case. What do you think?
