Andy Showalter; Waterloo West ‘89/UNI Panthers

Andy Showalter was a 2X Iowa HS State Wrestling placer/1X state champion out of Waterloo West HS, placing 4th at 3A 126 as a Junior in 1988 and 1st at 3A 130 as a Senior in 1989.

The bracket he won as a Senior had 4 state champions in it, including himself. The other state champions were Nate Hartle from SC East, Jarid Downey from Indianola and Matt Hatcher from CR Prairie. Hatcher and Downey actually won 2 titles. And to add on to this, there was a future D2 national champion in the bracket who didn’t make the podium. His name was Brian Zanders and I believe he won a D2 title for University of Nebraska, Omaha. 3A 130 was a pretty deep weight in 1989 and Andy Showalter went home with the wall chart.

Showalter went on to wrestle for UNI after HS.
