Watsonville City Council LISTENED AND ACTED ON OUR BEHALF to protect citizens and ecological resources from lithium BESS. Councilmember Vanessa Quiroz-Carter writes:

"Thank you for your public comment last night. At the end of the meeting I did request that we have an ordinance similar to that of Vacaville prohibiting BESS sites. In addition, Councilmember Orozco also requested that the council send letters to the Board of Supervisors and the state the conveys the public’s disdain for this project. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions. "

Right now, the County Supervisors have completely dropped the BESS issue, are NOT creating any Ordinance to protect people or natural features of our area, because as they say, they are broke, and they were relying on New Leaf to pay for reports and an EIR (environmental impact report). But in Vacaville, an Ordinance was made to deny lithium BESS that is CEQA-exempt, and therefore did not require an EIR. CEQA is the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) from a 1970 state law requiring state and local agencies to identify, disclose, and mitigate significant environmental impacts of proposed public or private projects. Vacaville stated that regulating BESS would not have any negative environmental or social impacts and is therefore not subject to CEQA and EIR.

So they are leading the way... next good news is that sodium (abundantly available, non-flammable) batteries are really taking off and lithium is just a scrap of a ghost of the past, no relevant developer would use this dangerous lithium technology. Sodium batteries do not have to be cooled and don't have the loud chronic noise of the lithuim BESS. New Leaf Energy should be thoroughly ashamed of their greedy over-reaching, that they are trying still to push this on our community, knowing it is UNSAFE and creates numerous other unlivable issues for residents and wildlife.

That is a good end to this day!

Very grateful to the Watsonville City Council members, who were shut out of the dialogue completely by the County Supervisors and had to write a formal letter demanding to be informed at all, of the movements of this diabolical pr

To Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors:

Good morning, yesterday we had our Community Meeting and Supervisor Hernandez came, so one of our organizers asked him to tell the people why he supported the BESS.

There was much bluster but also this highly emotional statement " Now that they [New Leaf Energy] have gone to the State, we are gonna fight this BESS with you!" in front of 100 people.

What do you Supervisors all think about that?

I think that Felipe says whatever people want to hear, to try to not be in the fire of accountability. This is why we do not trust him. I am asking for your positons to verify what he said.

Please confirm your position on allowing the lithium BESS to be in our County. We in Watsonville are aware that re-election time is upon Felipe and he will say anything including lying to our faces and going back on what he says elsewhere, to maintain likeabiliy to as many people as possible.

This matter will definitely be in the media, so please answer about the County's position on "fighting" a BESS in Watsonville.

Thank you,

Phoenix Artemisia
