There’s something about fresh lines. 🥎
I repainted the batter’s boxes, home plates, and pitching mounds at Shape Up.
And today, I stood back and looked at everything.
Bright white. Crisp. Clean. Sharp.
And for a minute, I wasn’t standing inside Shape Up Sports Academy.
I was back on a softball field.
When I was a college coach, I lined my own field. There was just something about walking out after the infield had been freshly dragged, seeing those perfectly straight white chalk lines, freshly painted batter’s boxes, and a bright white home plate.
If you’ve spent enough years around a ball field, you probably know exactly what I mean.
The smell of the dirt.
The sound of the drag.
The chalk on your shoes.
The freshly cut grass.
The quiet field before the players arrive.
And those bright white lines that somehow make everything feel ready.
Seeing it today brought back a nostalgia I wasn’t expecting.
But the more I stood there looking at it, the more I realized how connected those years are to what we’re building at Shape Up.
Shape Up wasn’t created just to give athletes another place to hit, pitch, throw, or work out.
It was built from everything I learned during all those years of coaching.
The details matter.
Preparation matters.
Standards matter.
Creating an environment where athletes know someone cares about their development matters.
Back then, dragging the field and putting down those lines was part of preparing a place for my athletes to compete.
Today, painting those same lines at Shape Up feels like an extension of the exact same thing.
The field looks different.
Most athletes are younger.
The name on the building is different.
But the purpose behind it feels incredibly familiar.
We are still preparing a place for athletes.
Still trying to give them an environment that makes them want to work.
Still teaching them that the little things matter.
Still trying to help them become better athletes—and better people—than they were when they walked through the door.
That’s Shape Up.
It’s not about recreating my college coaching days.
It’s about taking everything those years taught me and pouring it into the next generation.
And apparently, every once in a while, all it takes is some fresh white paint and a perfectly straight batter’s box to remind me just how connected those two chapters really are. ❤️🥎
