On January 23, 1984, professional wrestling was changed forever inside Madison Square Garden.
Hulk Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik to capture the WWF Championship, a moment that didn’t just crown a new champion — it ignited Hulkamania. What followed was a cultural phenomenon that pushed wrestling out of regional territory status and into the mainstream.
Hogan’s victory marked a dramatic shift in the industry. The larger-than-life hero, bright colors, and undeniable charisma replaced the darker, villain-driven era that had come before. Fans instantly rallied behind Hogan, and WWF suddenly had a face capable of carrying the company nationally and globally.
Hogan would go on to hold the WWF Championship for over four years, one of the longest and most influential reigns in history. During that time, he headlined sold-out arenas, launched the Rock ’n’ Wrestling era, and became a pop-culture icon recognized far beyond wrestling.
That night at Madison Square Garden wasn’t just a title change — it was the birth of an era.
