Had a conversation with a customer yesterday that made me realize probably not enough people know this.

When you see “box finish” on a bowling ball, for example “2000 grit”, that does not mean that bowling ball is at 2000 grit. It only means that it was finished with a 2000 grit abralon pad or sanding disc of some sort. There are always very deep base cuts of texture underneath that final step of finishing.

When a ball comes out of a mold, it is shaved down to size with a lathe and as a result is around 180 grit give or take. It is then (usually) finished with a 500 grit sanding disc and then a 2000 grit sanding disc if it says “2000 grit” as the box finish.

Brunswick Bowling Brands will actually market what the finishing steps are on all their products.

Keep this in mind the next time you are surfacing your equipment at home. It’s not as simple as just hitting a ball with a 2000 pad. There are steps to it and there is certain resurfacing machinery that your local pro shop operator has or should have that make this process easy and repeatable from ball to ball.

Also, pro tip, stop using a ball spinner to put surface on your bowling balls. Ball spinners are most effective to polish or clean your bowling balls. The higher RPM promote smoothing up a product, not creating texture. Resurfacing machines in your pro shop are the best method of “resurfacing” your bowling ball. If you don’t have access to one, use a sanding disc by hand with water.
