A softball field doesn't just happen.
Someone lined the field before practice. Someone dragged the dirt after the rain. Someone stayed late to make sure everything was ready for the next game. Parents show up early, coaches stay late, and volunteers spend countless hours making sure players have a place to compete.

Most of that work happens without much attention, but players notice when they step onto a field that feels cared for.

Here's something we were thinking about: a softball player can go an entire game without touching the ball, but it's pretty hard to play a full game without interacting with a base.

And yet, bases are one of those things most of us barely notice until something goes wrong. Research on women's collegiate softball found that contact with a fixed base accounted for 9% of game injuries, with ankle ligament sprains representing 43.3% of those base-contact injuries.

We're not saying a base can prevent every injury. Sports don't work that way. We just think the equipment athletes run around, stop on, and come into contact with deserves a little more thought. For softball programs looking ahead to their next field upgrade, Soft Touch Bases is a good place to start.

A slide happens fast. One second a runner is sprinting toward the bag, and the next they’re dropping, reaching, and hoping they beat the throw.

The base.

It’s involved in nearly every part of the game, but it’s probably one of the last things anyone thinks about when they walk onto a field. We didn't set out to reinvent baseball. We just started wondering why the base had to be the way it had always been. It's something players interact with constantly, but it's one of those pieces of equipment most people never really think about. So we started looking at it differently, asking questions, trying things, and figuring out what could be improved. That process eventually became Soft Touch Bases. We’re proud of what we've created, but we're even more excited about the reason behind it: taking something familiar and finding a better, safer way to do it.

We spend a lot of time talking about the players, coaches, and parents who make baseball and softball what they are. But there’s another group that deserves some credit too: the people who keep the fields running.

The ones out there early getting the field ready, fixing what needs fixed, checking equipment, and making sure everything is ready before the players ever show up. Most people probably never think about who did it, they just know the field is ready when they get there.

We appreciate those people. They care about the game just as much as the people playing it, and that’s something we’re proud to be a part of at Soft Touch Bases.

Most people don't give much thought to what happens at the base until a close play brings everyone's attention to it.
A runner is coming in, the throw is on its way, and everything happens in a matter of seconds. Those moments are part of what makes baseball and softball so exciting, but they also make the equipment players interact with incredibly important. That perspective is at the heart of Soft Touch Bases.
