They say Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer…Based on the crowds at the waterfront restaurants on the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes today, the “official committee” has clearly already voted YES – summer is here!

Wake Boat Ordinances on the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes.

A growing legal dispute is developing over the wake boat ordinances passed last year on the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes.

The Towns of Farmington and Dayton recently received formal notices of claim connected to the 2024 ordinances that restricted wake boating on local lakes.

The notices are considered a procedural step before a possible lawsuit and were filed by a law firm representing a nonprofit group opposed to the ordinances.

The original ordinances were passed after months of crowded public meetings and strong public support from residents concerned about shoreline erosion, lakebed disturbance, safety issues, and environmental impacts connected to enhanced wakes. S

Supporters of the ordinances say the measures were designed to protect the lakes, shoreline property, wildlife habitat, and public safety for all lake users.

The legal challenge argues the ordinances are unreasonable and harmful to wake boating enthusiasts, while supporters of the bans say similar ordinances have already survived legal challenges elsewhere in Wisconsin. Local officials also say municipalities typically have insurance coverage for this type of litigation.

The issue continues to generate strong opinions on both sides
