Here's something most people never hear: the EPA reports that indoor air is often 2–5× more polluted than outdoor air — and can spike up to 1,000× higher during and after painting. We spend roughly 90% of our time indoors breathing it.

Why should you care? Conventional paint off-gasses the same VOCs found in cigarette smoke — benzene, formaldehyde, and toluene. Benzene and formaldehyde are confirmed human carcinogens, and toluene is a known neurotoxin. The EPA notes these don't stop emitting when the paint dries. Lung cancer in people who never smoked, along with VOC-linked neurological conditions, has been rising for years.

Limewash is different: zero VOC, breathable, and mineral-based, so your walls stay beautiful without trapping toxins in your air.

Are Paint Fumes a Health Concern? What the Science Says 07/16/2026

Did you know that modern latex paint found on most walls and ceilings is connected to many of the major health epidemics in society. Lung Cancer, Autism, Asthma, Parkinsons, Alzheimer’s and over a dozen neurological diseases. Hundreds of studies on this stuff. It’s the VOC’s

Are Paint Fumes a Health Concern? What the Science Says New research raises concerns about potential health risks from common paint chemicals, especially for pregnant women. Here's what to know.

Conventional paint doesn't just add to your indoor air pollution — it creates the whole problem.

Every coat seals your walls in a non-breathable film that off-gasses VOCs indefinitely (they don't stop when it dries) AND traps the fumes from your cleaners and air fresheners inside with nowhere to go. It's a gas chamber disguised as a fresh coat of paint. It's no wonder the EPA reports indoor air is often 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and we spend about 90% of our time indoors (EPA, "The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality").

Limewash is the opposite: mineral-based, breathable, zero VOC. It lets your walls exhale instead of sealing your family in with the fumes — with the same soft, living depth you see here. Ask us about starting your Zero VOC Home.

This Independence weekend, we're thinking about the veterans and generations before us who built this country by hand — including the walls. Colonial builders limewashed their homes with slaked lime, water, and natural pigment. No factories, no synthetic chemicals. Just the land and hard work.

Somewhere along the way we traded that for convenience in a can: synthetic paint and synthetic cleaners, both loaded with VOCs, sealed into our homes by paint that doesn't breathe. The EPA's own research (the TEAM Study, 600+ residents across multiple states) found indoor VOC levels routinely 2–5x higher than outdoors, regardless of location.

We can't turn back the clock on everything. But we can bring that old, self-reliant, natural-materials mindset back to our own homes — starting with the walls. That's what our Zero VOC Home Program is built for.

Did you know the White House got its name because of limewash?

When stonemasons finished the sandstone walls in 1798, they coated the entire building in lime-based whitewash to protect the porous stone from freezing through winter. They kept refreshing it every year. By the time they switched to paint in 1818, everyone had been calling it "the White House" for over a decade. (Full story on the White House Historical Association's website — whitehousehistory.org)

When I was deep in my research on limewash, I found the original recipe in a book written in that same era. It's the same formula we use today. Same minerals. Same process. Zero VOC — because no synthetic chemicals existed yet, and as it turns out, none are needed.

We make our limewash in small batches using that same time-tested recipe, and it's available for purchase.

Same ancient formula. Same zero-VOC mineral finish. Same protection that's been working on walls — including America's most famous ones — for over 200 years.

If it was good enough for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, it might be right for yours.

In 1950, less than 1% of American children had asthma. By 2011, that number had climbed to 9.5%. That's over a 1,000% increase — documented by the NIH and CDC — in one generation.

The same period saw latex paint go from a novelty to the dominant coating in nearly every American home. Research published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy directly links VOC emissions from indoor paint to asthma development, and the EPA confirms those VOCs never stop off-gassing — even after the paint is long "dry." The same volatile organic compounds found in ci******es that cause lung cancer are in conventional latex paint.

Limewash has zero VOCs. It's made from lime, water, and mineral pigment — the same material used on walls for 5,000 years, long before childhood asthma became an epidemic.

1 in 5 women with lung cancer have never smoked. That's more than twice the rate of men who have never smoked.

Why is this?

Are women more prone to be inside throughout the day? Are women more prone to be cleaning the house? Are women more prone to light candles?

In order to understand why women who have never smoked have twice the rate of the deadliest cancer in the world than men do, we have to look at their environment. Where are they spending their time?

Is there anything in that environment that has been proven — with research and government studies — to cause lung cancer?

The answer is most definitely yes.

The paint on your walls emits the same VOCs that are found in ci******es. Your indoor air on average is 2–10x higher in these compounds than outdoor air — due to the paint on your walls continuously leaching VOCs into the air, along with your candles and your household cleaning products.

We are living in a gas chamber. And women are spending more time there than anybody else.

The cancer rates reflect it.

We choose to speak through action rather than words. We choose to actually serve our community and enhance their lives rather than profit from them at the detriment of their health. This is the mountain we are prepared to die on.

Beautify… Solidify.

Opening your windows helps — but it doesn't solve the problem.

According to the EPA's research on indoor air quality, VOC levels inside your home stay 2–10× higher than outdoor air even with ventilation. The reason? Conventional paint off-gasses indefinitely. Your walls are the source — and no breeze fixes that. During painting, concentrations can hit 1,000× outdoor levels. The EPA confirmed it.

Limewash is the only finish with zero VOCs — zero off-gassing, zero buildup, zero risk. A surface that actually lets your home breathe.
