Therapeutic riding uses horse related activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of people with disabilities. The horse's movement is unique and produces 3-dimensional rhythmic, repetitive movements which research has shown closely simulates the movements of the human pelvis while walking. Some of the benefits riders may receive from experiencing these movements include: increased circulation, relaxation of spastic muscles, strengthening of weak muscles, development of balance, improved coordination, improved posture, increased vocalization, improved sensory awareness/processing and improved attention to task. Individuals of all ages with varying disabilities and conditions participate in equine assisted activities. These impairments may be in areas of gross motor skills (language, articulation, memory). Some types of disabilities and conditions that participants present may include: Amputations, Autism, Brain Injuries, Cardiovascular Impairments, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Emotional Disabilities, Hearing Impairments, Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Post Polio, Speech Impairments, Spina Bifida, Spinal Cord Injuries, Visual Impairments, Hydrocephalus, Developmental Delay, Sensory Integration Deficits, ADHD/ADD, and other physical, emotional and cognitive disabilities. CCTRC has a weight limit of 190 lbs. at this time.
