As a coach, one of my primary goals is to keep my competitors’ amygdala deactivated so their prefrontal cortex and hippocampus can work at their highest capacity. That’s where real decision-making, creativity, and effective problem-solving happen—especially in the dynamic flow of competition. This process begins long before they step on the mats. In training, my coaching approach is intentionally designed to minimize stress and pressure so athletes can fully absorb what they’re learning. When the amygdala stays quiet, the mind stays open.
